Apple Creek Whitetails forced to euthanize 7 Flees Does

Apple Creek Whitetails was put on WI State quarantine just before the holidays due to the CWD positive found at Flees' farm in WI.

The farm quarantine was issued just before the holidays and we were left with few choices. We were actively entertaining our hunting clients and our farm needed to transfer animals in and off our farm.  We were told that a DNA test was being conducted that might prove the CWD samples got mixed up somehow with the 3 submitted that day.  We were also given the option that we could bring in an appraiser and wait out the quarantine (over 20 months).

However, after careful consideration, the only option left was to euthanize the 7 flees does that we paid roughly $150,000 for. Due to the circumstances we were facing, the state helped us expedite the CWD testing and were able to get off of our quarantine in less than a week, which enable our business to run again.

We were also told by the state that we could be put on quarantine again for the same reason if other trace animals were to be found.

We hope for the best concerning all farms containing these trace genetics.

Discussed on the ACA meeting last night was obtaining funding for a live blood test.  More info is needed as to how many animals are needed for the government to allow a live blood test, but I would plead with people to draw blood on these animals before they are killed.  This would give the researchers more numbers and help us get to the end result of a live test.  Hopefuly with a live test a situation like this could be handled by a blood test instead of losing a huge investment.  We as an industry have got to make our own destiny. Its up to us nobody else.  If anyone has to put animals down that were  purchased off the Flees farm  PLEASE CALL LAURIE SEALE before they are destroyed so the proper samples can be taken for the research project.

The associated CWD positive certainly has been a big impact on the entire industry in one way or another. However I am curious as to why this posting was made at this particular time, and why it is worded the way it was. There are numerous farms under similar circumstances and who have a great deal of money at stake as well.

Regardless of the money at stake, I'm guessing truth and transparency is the reason for the post. It's better to hear straight from the source than to hear half truths and rumors from unreliable sources. This is not something anyone should try to hide.

The reason and timing of this post was due to news confirming the positive DNA match to original CWD positive animal at Flees' Farm.  We thought it prudent to wait until we received actual confirmation.

Now that that time has come and gone, we wanted to share with the industry why we chose to euthanize these animals to lift our farm quarantine status and to possibly help other farms navigate through this unfortunate situation and that we might all learn something from each other during this process.

We have heard all types of reports and opinions and thought it best to tell our story so others may learn from it.

Thanks Applecreek for sharing your info, I know you guys and others are going through a stressful time and too have to relive it over and over has to be hard!!! But I also think that this kind of information needs to be known by everyone because these are very real numbers and anyone of us could be in the same situation !!! Big or Small farms. Charlie.

Was probably a good move. If you can afford to do away with any doubts and keep business as normal going, Why not.   Most likely would have lost much more than the price sacrificed!  Sucks that once again a perfectly healthy animal falls to the face of cwd without even being sick.  Sucks for you guys!

Apple Creek is truly a stand up operation and very professionally ran.  They chose to do the right thing and get the information out and not let rumors and hype rule the day.  This is how all respectable operations should deal with bad news.

I will agree, there were six producers in Iowa and one producer from MO that killed animals to be released from quarantine, due to our positive finding. Not one producer received compensation.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your time the does and the moneys spent to purchase them. Your in our prayers

I must have missed all these rumors that are supposed to have been floating around because I hadn't heard a single word spoken about any producers. In fact privacy and respect for those directly affected seems to be the general consensus. I mentioned the timing because it was about a week ago that DNA results were announced and yet the posting to start this discussion was made the night before the biggest auction of the season. Side note here, I am NOT participating in the auction as a seller. I am just concerned for all the hard working programs both big and small, who are in the sale being affected. For some this is their first time ever in the sale. I hope their ability to get fair money for their lots wasn't affected by the timing.

What I am curious about is where Apple Creek stands on a live test enlight of their experience described above? There wasn't any mention of the topic. That kind of insight would be a help to the industry.

What would it matter?  They had a choice to make just as farms in every other state does. If they stood to lose their business over a few does, why would they not do whats best for them.  From the looks of Apple Creek Whitetails i would say they dont go around everyday and make knee jerk decisions!

I find it funny that when some smaller farms in some other states get cwd and its freakin world wide news but then when some others may be in the same position its like oh no, hush, hush.   That right there is one of the reasons this deer industry will never be united!!!!   By the looks of the prices so far i would say the animals are doing pretty well.

I think if more farms told everyone about what was going on it would help unite Deer Farmers ? I'v heard rumors about 3 in Mo. alone and I also think if there's a problem with a Farm.............I would like information about it BEFORE I considered buying from ANY Farm? I guess I'm not saying "air everyone's dirty laundry" because well we would need a whole website for all that drama ?LOL :D

But hey with the prices from the last couple Auctions it's pretty easy to see this Business is in GREAT shape and No Worries and Life Rolls on!! :(

Yeah really, I hear word of this may make it all the way up here.  Yeah lets just keep it private for a few!

And who said anything about keeping anything private trying to hide anything??? And who said anything about small farms verses big farms as to them having CWD and being open about it???

I only listened to about 2 hours of the auction yesterday and none so far today. In that short time I heard some farms speak DIRECTLY to their own animals status as far as quarantines. They didn't hide anything about their farms.

Each seller at auction can choose to discuss their farms status and I appreciate their openness. Without questions in my own mind answered I wouldn't bid on an animal. That's called smart business.

And who said that Apple Creek shouldn't do what's best for them??? I assume your talking about killing those does. I never said they shouldn't kill them. I asked where they stood on a live blood test after having gained the insight of this process.

Apple Creek for whatever reason decided to make a public statement about those 7 deer. That's cool. If there were rumors to kill ok. I never heard any. In fact when I read the post I was surprised they were affected because I didn't think they had bought much the last couple of years for the breeding farm since they are so large already.

They explained their reasoning for choosing to kill them instead of waiting 20 months. They had to in order to keep customers happy. Ok. I was hardly the only person who thought the timing was intended to hurt sellers at another auction companies sale.

But I am looking forward to hearing their thoughts on a blood test.

(40,40,40); If they decided to tell the truth and do what was right for their farm without smoke and mirrors then good for them.   Maybe if more took that approach the world would be a better place.  If someone else loses a sale because a farm made an smart and honest business move somewhere else well thats how it goes i guess.

(40,40,40); Killing $150.000 worth of animals to keep your business free and viable sure sounds like somebody on Apple Creeks end paid the piper for this mess.   Hard to think someone like Scott and Apple Creek got to where they are without hard work and smart business moves like this one!

Would like to hear Apple Creeks thoughts.

Thanks for being up front Apple Creek. News like this should be brought to everyone's attention immediately so people can protect themselves. Who would want to go to a auction and by an animal that could destroy their own farm. Best thing would be to wait it out see what happens then go forward. Roger how people stand is their own business not anyone else's. Where CWD is found should be everyone's business immediately so we can protect ourselves. Been a while since I been on here but I see some things never change same old people not minding their business

Yes it should be, and it is generally a big secret.  And until we get a live test it will be this way.  Test the animals and then business as usual.

Thank you Apple Creek for being transparent.  At this time a purchaser of an animal really has no idea where the seller stands in regards to the tracing going on.  And if you live in the same state and do not have to report animal movement until your yearly inspection this could be real problematic.
