So I have been keeping up on some of the new lots on an auction site.

I am new to the on line auctions and placing bids on something that is up for sale for several day.

I can kind a understand a man bidding up stock to keep the value of his stock up or maybe he would like to purchase it from someone else. But I'm not sure why someone would raise there own top/winning bid when they have not been bid against in over 22+ hours?

I have seen 5 different bidders raise there own bid and one of them did it twice in/on the same lot?

I guess I'm asking does someone have the rule book to this game? I would really like to play but not sure how.

Buyer beware. Much safer to hook up with a person and do a one on one deal. You are looking at a couple guys hooking up to run their lots up and give false value. If there is a reserve on the lots they will run it up close and then back off.

Brent,,, this has happened to me before.....say something is at $500 and for giggles i bet $510 and am high bidder. Then i decide to go back later and put a proxy bid of $750 cuz i may not be available in case i am outbid. when i put the proxy bid in it then raised the bid to $520. Could be a few reasons for this which i won't go into,,,i'll just call it a glitch in the system..I learned to just set the price i am willing to pay from the beginning.

It is not only the online auctions this happens in, nor the deer industry. At live auctions farms have others bid up their lots, especially if it is non reserve.

I have seen it happen at live auction before as well.

I was having a moment and needed to vent a little bit. I have no problem paying a fair price for anything I would like to have.

But I refuse to be forced into the purchase. I wish they would have just put a reserve on it.

Unfortunately the animal would have been a good one for me to add to my farm. It is going to go for a real fair price.

I will just wait for another day and a different deal.

I wish you had talked to me first or waited for my reply to your email before declaring that someone was doing something dirty and underhanded on Whitetail Exchange.  First let me say that it is impossible for someone to raise their bid and make their bid higher on a no reserve item.  You can increase your proxy, but this does not increase your bid as stated above.  I have researched which item you were bidding on and looked into this.  It is not as you have accused.

If you will look closely at the bid prices on any item on Whitetail Exchange and see where a bidder number is listed twice in a row you will see that the most current one is ALWAYS $10 less than the bid above it.  Why is this?  People are placing proxy bids on the item.  People are placing a proxy and gettin outbid is more accurate.  Let me give an example.

Say an item is at $300.  You look at it and decide that you would pay up to $800 for it and place an $800 proxy bid.  You then become the high bidder at $310.  Another bidder decides that they want to bid on it.  They bid $400.  The bid history shows the new bidder at $400 and you at $410.  Did you bid again? No, the software bid for you.

Thats the easy part of Proxy bidding.  This still doesnt explain why you see the same bidders number twice in a row.  There is an easy exlaination for that too.  The simple answer is that this is what the system does when a proxy is surpassed.  Using the above example, lets say that the second bidder bids $750 next.  Once again, the software bids $750 for this bidder and $760 for you.  Bidder number 2 then decides that he is going to bid $900 next.  The software puts you in at $800 and bidder number 2 at $810.  In this case it shows your last two bids at $760 and $800 which was your proxy. They are listed consecutively on the site as this is accurate.  The software bid for you once when the bid was below the proxy and then went all the way to the ceiling of the proxy when you were surpassed.

This is impossible on Whitetail Exchange.  Increasing your proxy does not increase your bid ever.

Great job Todd explaining how the proxy bidding works and how it can show an unusual looking bidding history. I do fully trust that Todd has established as fair an online bidding system that he can. The one thing he can not control is guys asking their buddies to use their bidder numbers to help push the bidding up faster or further. I know many hate that this type of thing happens, however all you as a potential bidder need to remember is don't bid more than YOU are willing to pay. That is really very simple. Make smart buying decisions based on sound business choices. Stop blaming the auctions or the sellers if you over pay for something. ( I AM NOT SAYING ANYONE HERE IS BLAMING ANYONE ) I have been to many auctions and not once did I see a gun pointed at someone telling them to bid more. ( Although Grace does have a way of using peer pressure on a guy. LOL!! But that is his job. ) That said, we all get caught up at times and bid more than we should. God knows I have!!!

What is wrong is someone using other's to push their prices higher to establish some sort of benchmark for their product.. They then can claim their deer/semen is worth this because it sold at auction for a high price. Truth might be that it never actually sold and it was all a show to establish this perceived high value. This does happen.

Thats how you answer a question or remark Todd, good for you.   Sounds legit and correct, if not and someone can prove it then they have the same right as you to get on here and explain and prove in detail something different.  No need for long drawn out pissing matches.

One thing I forgot to add.  You will also notice when there are two bids in a row from one bidder number that the most recent one will be at EXACTLY the same time as the bid that outbid them.  The software places the ceiling of the proxy bid and the outbid at exactly the same time.

I've always felt very comfortable bidding on Whitetail Exchange.  I feel Todd has done all he could to create a honest bidding site.  The only problem is having a friend bid up the auction but there is no way to stop that poor behavior.  So have a fair idea on your bid and don't let yourself bid higher than you feel it is worth.  Thank Todd good explanation.

Buddy bidding is gonna happen anytime there is an auction. But I see a problem when an auction company issues more than 1 bidder number person. I was at one sale and 1 guy had 9 different bidder numbers. And that to me is the auction companies fault.

You are right, the aucion house has no control over people artificially bidding up prices. But the games played at auctions make me very skeptical of some of the claims of high priced sales. We don't do any auctions anymore.

Todd I was not pointing fingers or blame on you or Whitetail Exchange.
I should not of vented out for public viewing.
I would like to apologize for any inconvenience or harm this may have caused.
I do appreciate you taking the time and explaining the bidding process.
There is not a day that goes by I do not visit Whitetail Exchange at least once and
I enjoy your auction site very much.

Todd...if it isnt supposed to happen then you owe me $10 :p cuz it did happen last yr. I'm a lot of things but a liar isnt one of them. as brent stated..i too am on WTE EVERYDAY and appreciate the site. Thank you for it

I have to say it also raised my Proxy bid once. It was a straw of Super Duty that WE had on to start bids out for a State Association auction. I place a proxy bid of $200 then thought I would raise

my bid. I raised my bid to $222 and it took my bid for that amount. There was not anyone else bidding. My bid was the only one placed.  I won the bid at the banquet auction, and had to pay the $222

Super Duty was not a No Reserve item.  It was a benefit auction item with a reserve on it.  Bidding on an item with a reserve is a totally different thing.  If the reserve is not met, every time you bid it will raise your bid.

Rick,

If you can send me the auction ID that you were bidding on I can check it out.

Todd...i think mine MAY have been a reserve too

I don't remember the id..nor if i won...i just remember seeing my bid go up $10 when i entered a proxy..but then again IF it was a reserve...it would have gone up to the proxy..

I'll have a look back and see if anything rings a bell man

and i was kidding about the check man...if i was real worried about it i would have been on the phone with you in no time. Shyness is not one of my qualities ;)
