Have a question for the group. Does anybody leave their breeder bucks with the does during fawning season? I always pull them and put back in the buck pen and watch nervously as the pecking order is established. I know it would be safer for them with the does but don't want to endanger fawns either.:)

I used to leave my breeders in with the does and their fawns because I didn't have any other place to put them. They never intentionally hurt any, but with the way they'd get their hackles up and race around on cool mornings made me nervous. Everyone knows how hard a fawn is to see!

They do better growing out with the other bucks. Seems when left in with the does that they do not grow out as well. I think between the doe bothering them and then the fawns bugging them they don't do as well to much stress. This is just what i have observed from my own personal experiance. Evan in the wild bucks always stick together while growing out.

I agree with Virgil on this. I also think that the competition in the amongst the bucks for food drives them to eat more.

We tried an experiment last year, pulling out half of our breeder bucks and putting them into a bachelor group. Conclusion - it made no difference. We thought leaving them in the breeding pens might be detrimental to antler growth - not so. We had the same percentage increase size as those in the breeding pens. A certain amount went down - same as in the breeding pens. We concluded it wasn't worth the extra stress of moving them out and tying up another pen to create that bachelor group.

Thanks for the info, I seen you moving the bucks during your show a couple weeks ago and you mentioned that you were doing it as an expirement with your breeders, so thanks for posting your results....great show by the way, with out a doubt my favorite show on tv right now, I got it recording on the DVR just incase I am not home and i miss an episode.
