BAM and surgery

There have been some questions and doubts about using BAM to sedate a deer for surgery. I've been doing it for eight years with pre BAM Medetomidine(Domitor), and lately with BAM. I sedated a 180 pound buck yesterday with 1cc of BAM. He was down in eight minutes. We administered some Lidacaine around the surgery site. He was out for an hour, no movement or kicking. I administered the reversal Atipamezole and he was up in under ten minutes. I did not reverse the Butorphanol.

We were repairing a stoma where he urinates straight from the bladder out onto the ground. He has a stoma because he lost most of his urinary tract from an internal infection when he was nine months old. The stoma closes over time and requires reopening the hole larger. We've done this every 3-5 months for the last eight years.

I've always used Domitor, or now BAM with no problems.

What about the third reversal? I just used BAM for the first time this weekend and was impressed! The only thing I don't like is the 3 reversal shots...

the Tolazoline reversal is much the same as the Atipamezole, reversing the Medetomidine but not as well as the Atipamezole does. So I didn't use it. MY vet agrees with that decision.

I didn't like the three reversal shots to begin with but it really isn't a problem, and surely worth it when you consider how well the BAM works.

I have used BAM on over a hundred deer, and have never had a problem with mixing the reversal in 1 syringe. Just did 40 sunday TB testing for another farm and all of them were back on there feet in under 10 minutes.

added, I've been averaging for total deer sedated $12.00 a deer, down and up total. Now consider some of those deer were EHD deer and not knocked all the way out on purpose.

How did you decide on using 1cc? My directions say 2cc on bucks.

I've been using Medetomidine(the M in BAM) for eight years on this particular buck. I've found that 10mg of the drug works very well to keep him out. 2cc of BAM has over 20mg of the drug, so I cut it to 1cc or 10mg of Medetomidine. Worked perfect.

Zoopharms recomendations take all things into account . But we know each deer is different in how it reacts to any drug. I hit a pretty wild doe with .5cc and had to add another .3cc to get her down, total .8cc on a 80 pound doe. So Zoopharms recs of 1 to 1 1/2cc would be good.

I hit a 1.5 year old buck with .25cc and he went out like a light. I really didn't want him all the way out but it worked out that way. I was treating him for EHD at the time.

I have played with the dosages pretty much and FOR ME I can just about cut the dose in half on MOST deer. The good thing about BAM is that if the dose used dosen't knock em out you can hit them again, this drug is very safe and 100% reversable in just a few minutes.

I have sedated a buck three times in four days without any bad reactions or lingering probs.
