Black fawn photos

I think if my memory serves me right these very photos were posted last year. I think some one even knew of the town where the deer was seen. I think it was in TX some where. I am not sure though, I know Jack was interested if anyone had a melanistic buck that was harvested.

I've received several e-mails of this picture. The one I got said the picture was taken by RJ Verge from Beamsville, Ontario Canada. Someone visiting my farm a few weeks ago said that there is a buck that has been seen on trail cameras in central NY. About 30 miles from me. He was quite excited because it was seen near where he hunts. They had even called in our DEC and they confirmed it to be a melanistic deer. I explained to him about preserving the testicles and to call me ASAP as I would purchase them from him. Gun season starts here on Saturday. I can only hope to receive that call. And see for myself if it truly is a melanistic deer.

The running black fawn was posted by painted meadows(billie joe). Do search on melanistic fawn. Rick

This is a fawn that a lady called about a few years ago that needed some help with fawn issues. I forgot her name and where she was from. I though she lived in NY or one of the North East states. I wish I would have kept her info .

I've asked some of my Texas friends for help on this as Texas has the largest wild herd of this type of deer. Sandy you have only 50 to 60 hours max after death to get those testicles collected so have that lined up. 24 hours or less would be best. Have him place the testicles in a cooler with a ice pack on the bottom, then place a 1 inch styrofoam over the ice pack, then about three inches of paper crushed up. Place testicles in a plastic bag to conserve moisture on top of all of this. He should put them in the fridge as soon as he can. Never freeze the testicles or allow them to get very warm.

I collected post mortem a rocky mountain bighorn today and got 185 1/2cc straws of top quality semen. Also did two mule deer but only one was good.

Sandy if you get some semen Roger P and I are very interested in this project. It is a recessive so the first fawns would be brown. You would then need to bred the doe fawns back to this black sire to get the color started. It will be a long project.

Jack thanks for the info. I would be happy to send them to you for collection if I do indeed receive that call. I have seen a collection done on testicles but don't have the correct equipment or feel confident enough to try it myself. Here on out I will just be waiting for that phone call.

Hi Sandy,

Back in Texas for the winter this small Melanistic Buck at friends ranch was seen coming to feeder. How much interest do you have in harvest?

Scott

For me personally, I don't have a lot of interest in the breeding in my heard. If I had one it would be great but probably wouldn't go way out of my way to get it. I have noticed interest with some others and would be happy to help them out to get the genetics into their heard. Someone visiting my farm mentioned it and said that he would be actively looking for the buck. So, if the opportunity comes, I wouldn't pass it up.

I wonder what would happen if you crossed a melanistic with a white or albino? That would be kinda cool to get a pied with black patches instead of brown or the opposite.

Crossing browns or melanistics with whites or albinos will not produce piebalds of any color. Piebald, white, albino and melanistic are all seperate genes that produce each individual color trait in deer. The only trait that would show up would be the dominant trait. There may be an outside chance that you could cross a piebald and melanistic together and get a black spotted offspring. That would probably be one of the rarest of rare deer ever.

Just my opinion.

That is no joke WVdeerman, thinking about that genetically has my mind boggled for sure. It would be cool none the less. If you know how to set up genetic diagrams and pedigrees you can quickly realize how rare this would be. I am even having a hard time wrapping my head around it. I will see if I can make one and post it here so you can see how hard it is. I may need to talk to my past professors on this one.

We just had a show on the Pursuit channel that showed the various diagrams for pied and white bucks when crossed with brown. We didn't include melanistic because we don't have them at Wild Rivers.

Wild Rivers, do you have them handy where you could post them in the near future?

Thanks,

Johnny B

Is there a good demand for pied and albino deer ? We don't have any in our area that I know of so was just courious............I think all of them are really cool.

I just checked my Trail cam and had this little doe with a white patch on it. Is this normal?
