Yes I know Blackbucks are not deer. But I am trying to learn how to raise them. Looking for any info.

Thanks

Andrew

They are grazers and do well on grass pastures. You can mix them with other deer and exotics if you have an enclosure 5 acres or bigger. The males are territorial and defend their plot of real estate firecly against intruding males. The females can breed every 5 months and usually have only one kid. Unless raised in small pens they tend to be "flighty". The males mature in 3-4 years gradualloy turning black.

i know a guy who claims he had no problem selling to hunt preserves. he also wished he had some more .i dont know how they sell now, but he claimed he could sell them way before a whitetail.DC

Well I don't own any yet. I'm wanting to buy some after I get some land but like everything I do, I research it ALOT. The Blackbucks seem to be very difficult to find information on. Ideally what I would like to do is raise them and whitetails. I know they do not do well with cold. But I didn't know if they required any special feeds or have any other special requirements. From what you have said though it seems like they should be a rather easy species to raise.

The cold is deadly to them. Even here in the south, this year's winter has taken its toll on blackbucks. They are difficult to tranquilize. They do not tolerate telazol, but straight xylazine works pretty good. Succostrin works well too, but dosage rates are difficult to calculate as each animal has a different metobalism and overdosing can be the difference of 1/10th of a cc.

So trying to raise them in Missouri would not likely work to well with out a large enough barn to be able to get them in out of the cold when nasty weather hits. What are the land requirements for the blackbuck? I'd guess using a weight ratio like you do to figure the whitetail pasture utilization it would be around around 10 animals to 1 cow calf unit. I'm getting way ahead of my self though I don't even have the land yet to do anything. Plus raising the exotics is going to get me into trouble I'm going to want to raise everything. I'd love to raise whitetail, blackbuck, red deer, fallow, sika, sambar, axis, and pretty much anything else I can get my hands on. But that would take some serious land and the climate would not be suitable for raising all of those species with out special accomodations.

you know i dont know to much about blackbuck, but scott is right about darting them,I do know that .I dont know what kina cold is deadly but he never said he lost any to cold .all he had was good windbreak, maybe prolonged cold but i tell you it get cold in okla.Dc

I raised them for years in Pa. If your pen is not big enough like Scott said: the oldest males are killing machines.

They are one of the most sought after exotics as they are such striking beautiful trophies. Horns need to be 24 inches or longer to be classified as a true "shooter" but hunters are happy harvesting those with 19" horns.

thats 24" measuring with the spiral not straight up correct? Which is right around 20" Straight up.

It sounds like the most difficult thing with raising these things is going to be keeping them from killing each other. I'd guess having many smaller pens is going to better than trying to keep them together in age classes. Any clue on how many bucks to does?

Yes measuring the spiral. I have no experienc with them in small pens except with one buck and a herd of does. I had no problems with the breeding set up but I wouldn't consider more than one buck in a small pen.

So raise the bucks together in bachelor groups until they are going to be hunted? Keep your breeding herd the 1 large breeder and group of does nothing else in the pen. Similar to the way you would deer.

The bachelor bucks will fight if left together too long. After about a year, the sparring turns to death matches inside small enclosures.

So what size enclosures will I need to raise them with out them killing each other?
