I am having a heck of a time with a month old fawn, She bloated for no apperent reason on Sunday morning and refused bottle in morning, only ate 4 oz noon feeding, nothing on last feeding. Gave 10cc C&D antitoxin 5 cc pen g, went to bed. Next morning still bloated only ate an once or two, I gave 30grams Target Eloctromax paste. next feeding, at noon still bloated and not eating I deflated her with hypodermic needle. I tried to give her 2 oz milk mixed with 8 oz water and a tablespoon of baking soda, wouldnt take it, but did take 10 oz. of plain milk on last feeding. This morning i went out to feed and guess what, she is bloated with no appetite, at noon she ate nothing as well. So i just got in from giving her another dose of C&D antitoxin and pen G, and I deflated her again. I am out of ideas, What can i do to keep it from coming back?I want this fawn to take plain water or water mixed with a little milk, or even milk and baking soda for a few feedings but she spits it out and only drinks the plain milk then instantly swells. She is drinking plenty of water out of her own bowl, and she eat lots of pellets, but she is going to die if i cant correct this NOW, this is getting scarier every hour, If this is like the past 2 years, it will go on for a few more days and i will find her laying in the corner dead with a HUGE belly. I lost 2 fawns to bloating the last two years, I dont want to make it 3 years in a row, I cannot figure it out, I HATE bloat. Please let me know if you have any other ideas.

Is she going poop ? I had one that did this and was not pooping a few years back, She died, and we found out that she had a twisted stomach, from flipping over....maybe when one of the kids picked her up or something...The vet said she probably rolled over somehow and twisted her stomach shut like you would a garbage bag. Just a thought??

yes she does poop, perfect little pellets actually, so she is definately not bound up

Maybe a few drops of some type of gas relief, (Gas-X or Bean-O) never had a whitetail bloat Yet... but have had a few horses and the vet always gave them Baytril. Just a thought.

There are two kinds of bloat, gas or foamy bloat. gas bloat kills faster than the foamy kind. I just had a 13 day old fawn bloat, she was swelled up big and hard. I took a soft hose and lubed it with mineral oil and run down to stomach. You can here and smell gas come out. I done this about 4 times in about a 2 hour period. next morning she was doing a lot better. She was still swelled a little. I got a bottle of terabloat from vet and give 1 cc in stomach with feeding tube. All foam was gone in about 15 min. This is the first time I tried this and this is the first out of 3 fawns that I had live when getting bloated. I got this advice from other deer farmers and vet. It has helped me. Hope it will help you. JOHN

UPDATE: the fawn is doing very good, Thank you eric for the conversation on the phone the other day. She is eating well (currently2 oz. milk mixed in 8 oz. water), still bloats a little once in a while, but not much at all. I am going to continue feeding milk cut down with water today. I will evaluate her by tonight to see if i want to start graduating her back to all milk. I have giver her the Cand D antitoxin/ penG for the last three days which I dont think i need to continue with anymore today. she is also getting some pepto bysmol in her bottle to help coat her belly. Still to early to say she is going to make it but hopefully she is going to pull through ok. Thank you all for your help

Remember more is not always better. Gradually get her back to all milk, and I mean really slowly. If she is sucking you can feed her in 3 hour intervals if necessary. GO SLOW! I repeat go slow!!! If she goes off of the bottle again you will be starting all over again. I know from my experiences. Trust me she will be fine but do not get her back on milk or feed (clover, grass, etc) to quickly. I know you think she is not getting enough nutrition but she will be fine. Call me if you need anything. 660.342.5851

Lots of good advice on this thread! In the past I have used a gas relief as Rainer mentioned. Also what WV Rose said is great. I like to release the pressure by inserting a feeding tube into there stomach. You will hear the gas coming out in some cases, but you will almost always smell it!
