We have a 2 year old buck that had bloody very loose stool. we treated him with draxxin, penicillon, b12 vit A D E C, LA 200, corid. the blood has cleared up drastically. He is better this has lasted a week now we are thinking ulcers what can you do for ulcers. He is eating and drinking he just dont look right Any ideas? Thank you

If he had ulcers, diarrhea would likely be black. It is common to find blood in stool up to 2 wks after treatment for coccidia has discontinued. Good luck God bless. Get some probiotics going !!!

Dear Mr. Scott Heinrich or Dr. Joe:

THe farm where my Rosa is now living has a pen where three does are living. All three of them (they are "isolated" from the other deer) have had bloody stool (literally blood has poured out of them), and the pellets are always very dark, redish colored. This has been the case "off and on" for over 3-4 months now. The guys have tried all of the following meds to little avail:

Corrid in the drinking water for a week

Metrozinadole tablets (given by a dog DVM) for about 3 days straight

Auremycin crumbles in feed for several weeks

and lastly,

another antibiotic, I believe Erythromycin in the water

I am wondering... Do deer ever get gastritis or Helicobacter Pylori infections?

How would you treat for these issues?

The pellets have been checked for the usual parasites, apparently they are not coccidia. Now (today) they are taking the pellets to UofI for a culture to see what will grow.

In the meantime, how would you try to treat the deer? They are literally pooping blood.

many thanks,

lana

ps- Even if you are not Scott or Joe, if you've had a similar experience with your deer, please please feel free to add your advice if you are so inclined. Thanks to all here.

Thanks Susan.

The guys literally just drove 2.5 hrs to Champaign-Urbana, IL to drop off the stool samples for testing.

I will report the Lab's findings as soon as I learn them. If anyone has any other advice or educated guesses, I am curious to hear them.

Susan, is there an E-coli vaccine? or Josh, what about a vaccine for Clostridium E? Is that covered under the 7-way?

You might want to try neomycin liquid antibiotic in the water at a rate of one teaspoon per 100 lb of body weight. Try keep the amount of treated water they will almost clean up each day. treat for five days. this treatment is for digestive tract problems. It can be found at most livestock fleet farm stores in a brown bottle. here is a link to a site.

I am not aware of an E-coli vaccine. Neomycin in the water as Rodney said and there is another powder that you can use in the water. I will look it up and post info...it's sulfa-something. Comes in a small packet. Both of these I use on a couple of fawns that were down and very bad. The one, was so near death that I told Randy forget it! But...I gave her some strong doses of this powder mixture 2x per day and put her back out with her mother after 3 days when she could finally walk again. I then gave her 2x per day until I couldn't catch her anymore. Can you believe that doe took her back after over 3 days of being gone and me messing with her and the doe was a fawn that had given birth in August? Now....that is one good mother!

Thanks Susan! You just put a sweet smile on my face.

I'd really appreciate it if your would remember that sulfa antibiotic you used...

Rodney, thanks to you too for the good advice. It seems that we just have to keep hittin' 'em with antibiotics of different classes until something does it...

Here is a link to the powder I used for ecoli:

I used in conjunction with Baytril. I hit her strong (I will admit!). It was a "do it" or die situation. She got 3cc orally of neo-sol solution 2x per day and 3ccs of Baytril SQ 2x per day and I did it for 3 days that I took away from her mother and then until I couldn't catch her...which was about a week after I released her back to her mother. Yes...she is alive and doing well. It is what I used, and I've heard several times "you cannot overdose on Baytril", I do not know that for a fact, but went with it.

I would recommend reading the package and following instructions and then tweek as you see fit.

If you have bright red blood, it is a large colon issue. In our own deer, We use Uniprim, 1 scoop per 1000 lbs body wt top dressed once a day for 7-10 days. Keep on probiotics too. Also LS 50 in drinking water for 7-10 days works great,75 mg bottle per 100 gallons water, as sole source of water. Keep fecals going 3 times per year at least Contact your local veterinarian for supplies. Good luck and God bless.
