Breeder buck problem

Just noticed that our buck is having a problem with his breathing. I've never seen anything quite like it. First I noticed he would make a noise about every ten to fifteen seconds. Then it was that he would some times blow out his cheeks while breathing out. It also looks like he's got white snot in each nostril. His nasal passages on both sides right in front of his eyes are swollen up pretty good. He doesn't seem to be in distress. Pollen levels in this area have been terribly high this last week. My allergies have been the worst they have EVER been. Any ideas?? Thanks Wade

I agree with Goldstarr and Adam. I wouldn't hesitate with the Draxxin. My experience with deer blowing out their cheeks while breathing has proven to be a lung problem. Hopefully this is not the case with yours, but I would give him Draxxin if it was me. Good luck to you and the buck!

I guess Draxxin it is. How much would you give?? He's pretty large. I'd guess right now, he is probably close to 300 pounds. Thanks guys, Wade

two days ago we had a yearling buck doing the exact same thing and it turned out to be lung worm it wasn't white snot it was white worms coming out of his nose....... Safe gaurd pellets for the entire pin and gave him 1cc ivermc injectable and going to give him another 1cc in 8 days. Just what I had may not be what you have in this case but it sounds very familiar.

For Draxxin: Label on bottle recommends 1.1 per 100 lbs of body weight. I have had success with doubling the dose. It may be strong, but it sure seems to help. Also if it would be lungworm a good dose of valbazen would cure them up.

Wade, if you think he weighs 300, I'd give him 3 1/2cc of draxxin. And I would back it up by giving it 2 more times, and not more than 2 days apart each time. I think sometimes we quit too soon on antibiotics in our deer as we see them respond and start to come around. What does the doc tell us when we take antibiotics...''Take them all till they are gone''. Giving a higher dose might be alright, especially due to the deer's high metabolism. I've always tried to stick to the recommended dose or just slightly higher. I figure the drug company has probably already got me using more than necessary with their recommended dosages out of their desire to sell me more as soon as possible. Mark

the white worms are "snot bots" and are commonly found in the sinus passages of deer, Dectomax or cydectin rarely help but other than scooping or flushing them out, not much else.. For draxxin, i use 2 cc per 100 lbs SQ!! If given SQ it will last longer.. I would also recommend nebulizing this guy in the handling cradle, if calm buck, daily for a few days with albuterol or pulmocort(works great).. Depo medrol can be given IM for allergies as well.. we use 2 cc IM on bucks here at home.. When giving steroids, we always recommend giving a long acting antibiotic. I love excede and A 180 for this guys too(both 3 cc per 100 lbs SQ).. be careful giving antibiotics long term to deer with out good probiotic usage:) God bless!!
