I have a yearling buck that has a cracked hoof about an inch back from the tip it is obviuosly very sore as he will not put any weight on it.......the crack looks like it runs the whole way through but the nail is still attached......has anyone ever encountered something like this and what did you do?? There is no blood or and kind of seepage coming from the crack........I'm just not sure how to handle this type of injury......any help would be greatly appreciated!

Dennis if he is tame enough just coat it good with copper tox. Holves tend to heal pretty quickly. If it starts to look like infection may be starting then hit with a big dose of penicillin and coat the hoof well with copper tox. Just what I would do but you will see what others prefer in a case like this. I don`t like to get too invasive if not needed.

Dennis was his hoofs long? If not call me you need to get that taken care of don't let it go without treating ASAP... It can turn in to a long battle and summer is not a good time for that!!!

Update........The vet was out the other day and we clipped his nail back to where the break was.........just a little blood no puss so it looked good ad far as infection is concerned.....the good thing was the break was running around the hoof and not running up the hoof. He is doing much better now and on his way to recovery!
