I have a 130 inch yearling that broke both sides of his rack off at different times. They broke a little deeper than if he would have shed at the ped. What does everyone think it will do to his new rack next year? He WAS a perfect 4 x 4 !!!!! If it's not one thing it's another!!! But at least he is alive. Sorry for everyone's losses this year!!!! Charlie.

More then likely it will affect the side the broke deep could be a little could be a lot time will tell. My guess he will not be a straight rack next year but the year after could straighten out. I have had one break a 1 1/2 deep and was jacked up for 2 years then got better

Had this happen to a young buck last year, infection set in and was treated, hes rack was messed up a bit on that side this year, hope next year it works its self out. Not sure how deep it went but was a hole in his head and infection settled above his eye, looked like a prize fighter for a while. Wish you the best with him.

Thanks guys for the feed back!!!! He is acting very normal and even pushes the other ones around yet. I have a pal of mine had one of his yearlings break half his rack under the hide!!!! We put him down cut off antler and left a stump but there is a pretty big piece of plate under the skin still attached!!!,!! Nasty gave all the meds. He doing ok!! But my pal is the best deer farmer I know!!!

Charlie, I think he will be just fine. There is a big chance that his rack will grow normal, because it is so early right now. The buck has plenty of time to repair the damage on the skull and could be good as new by spring. One thing to watch for, once he get repaired, he will begin to grow new antler. In the cold January and February months it could get frost bitten on the new growth.

Good Luck !!
