I have a buck that keeps trying to breed one of my yearlings is it possible for her to be in heat or is he just being a horny yearling

I think he is just a confused yearling........i never heard of a doe being in heat this time of the year.....

thanks i was really hoping thats what yall would say really wasnt looking forward to having fawns in the dec jan snow lol

Don't count the heat thing completely out , I had an elk calf once on Dec 20th ! We named her Christmas .. ya never know !! :) Just a thought

Daywood - No worries! Rest assured your doe will not get bred. :)

As Dennis said, the buck is maybe confused, or as Wayne said ''delirious from the heat''(I know I am:)), but your buck is definitely not responding to a doe in heat(estrous that is).

I'm not sure it can be explained any further than it's just ''animals being animals''.

I've seen many times in the summer where my buck fawns were trying to mount their counterparts, both does and bucks. My black lab on occassion still tries to mount my female black lab, and she's been fixed for years. Again, I think it's animals just being animals.

And heat(temp) has nothing to do with a deer coming in heat(estrous)...photo periods(shortening of days) do that.

Just to point out, that doe that had her fawns on Oct 22, assuming it was a whitetail, was bred sometime around the 3rd week of March.

And that cow elk that had her calf on Dec 20th, was bred sometime around the 1st week in April.

Both dates, 3rd week of March and 1st week in April, though very late, are still a far cry away from a ''3rd week of July'' breeding.

And Daywood, just to further clarify, a breeding of a whitetail doe in the 3rd week of July would yield fawns in the 3rd week of February.

Guys, not trying to be a ''know it all'' here, but there are many that read this forum that are simply not in the know about some things, and I just didn't want them thinking that deer can be bred this time of year. Trying to help...not hurt.

Too bad human breeding isn't more controlled via season or otherwise...ie Aurora, Co.

So horrific and so so sad!

Actually it's not the physical breeding that creates these monsters...it's the ''cultural breeding'' that does this. God help us!!!

My 3 month buck fawn everyday mounting up on my chocolate male lab, and also my brothers female lab that is spaded. Could be a little bit of dominance and or trying to show his pecking order,, when my lab is laying on baby bucks mat baby will hoof him to move and shun his head at him till he does

We have only had deer here in Florida for 4 years. This year we had a Fawn brought to us the 1st week of february looked to be a couple of days old. We made the mistake of turning our button buck out with the does at the end of February after his nubs fell off. We now have a 4 week old fawn from a 8 month old doe. And have a 2 year old doe ready to give birth any day now. I have living proof that they can and will bread at any time.
