I have a buck that rubbed the tips of his velvet off. Its looked a little raw....been keeping an eye on it. About a half an inch or so underneath the rubbings, his antlers are swollen slightly. Is this a sign of infection?

If it is , what should I treat with? Is there any antibiotic I can mix into his feed instead of having to dart him with it?

Yes that is maggots that are under the velvet.......you need to put him down and depending on how bad it is you may have to saw off the antlers.....if it were my buck I would saw the antlers off and then treat him with heavy doses of antibiotics.......this is my opinion.......but you don't want to wait around antler infection can set in fast ......good luck!

Thank you for the info!!! Could I dart him with a strong antibiotic and leave the antlers alone?

No you can't just give antibiotic you also have to cut off the infected area or better yet what we do if any issues like this happen cut the entire antler off right at the base to try and make sure to get all of the infection. Good luck.

Dear DEER, Check out the video on cutting off antlers a couple of posts above yours. Interesting.
