Busted antlers (already)

We had an unidentified critter get around the pens last night and run several bucks into the fence. Nothing actually got into the fence, but what ever it was got them worked up really bad. We have an abundance of bears, coyotes and an occasional panther, so there is no telling what happened. Long story short, we got one that broke his antler at the base (probably had 5 to 6 inches and brow time starting), but didn't tear the velvet. It is just flopping limp. I have treated busted antlers in the past depending on the severity mainly because of potential infection in the velvet, but never had one just flopping limp. It is obviously uncomfortable at this point. What course of action would you take for the buck (I have already taken action for the critter)??

I have had this happen several times. Each time I did nothing. I remember one stffened back up and began to grow again. One flopped around for a time, stiffened/dried some, then fell off. Think the other did the same. Like I said, in either case I did nothing. Not saying you shouldn't, just sharing my experience. Good Luck!

I would follow Bruce's advice. Especially since you live in Florida. It doesn't take long at all to have the fly's lay eggs and cause an infection. Once in the bloodstream you can have a dead deer very quickly.
