What are everyones thoughts about having deer pens close to chicken houses?

Last time I was at Nathan Blosser farm he must have had ten million turkeys - I watched the video posted on this forum last night and went shopping for turkeys today - he sure grows um big

One of the issues with birds and fowl in your deer pens is TB. When the vet does the test, the bovine innoculant will show a reaction if the deer have been exposed to avian TB. The deer cannot get avian TB, but the TB test will need to be re-done. Many times on the second test, the vet will again use bovine innoculant (this is standard protocol) and it too comes back as a reactor, moving your deer into the "suspect" catagory. The tell-tale test (usually the third test) is a comparative test using both the avian and the bovine innoculant. This usually clears the deer, but it is the third test in less than 60 days. I doubt if any of us want to risk our animals for excessive TB testing.

The pens would be around 3-400 yards from them. This might not be the property I want if it will not work

Not alot of water run off. The houses are on mounds with ditches down the sides going out to paved road away from house. Water will not be anywhere near or in pens. I was more worries about the Deer catching a virus by air. We have no annual testing on whitetails yet in our state

We have a small hen house (15) hens in our buck pen. Never had a problem.

I can say our bucks dont have ticks or horse flies.

Jay show them the picture with the chickens in the deer feed trough. I thought that was pretty cool.

I'm still a little confused on whether or not it will be ok. It sounds like I'll be ok. I hope

Richard,

I honestly don;t think you will have a problem as long as there is not run off from the chicken pens on to the property where you will be putting the deer pens. If this is the case it should not be a problem..most of your problems come from the droppings of the chickens and or birds.....so if there is no run off onto your property you are looking at you really should be ok.

All of things BillieJo mentions are what would keep me from it. Consider other birds co-mingling around the chicken houses and droppings and then landing in your deer feeders. I knew someone who had relentless false positives during TB testing and their vet claimed it was because they built their deer pens where chickens had lived years earlier.

Just some thoughts.
