I am scheduled to pull CIDRs at 5:00 am tomorrow morning. When I moved the does out of their pen this afternoon I found a CIDR on the ground by the gate. I don't think this CIDR was there early this morning but can' be 100% sure. I guess I will find our which doe lost the CIDR early in a few hours.
Question: Am I screwed on this one or can she still be AI bred?
It sounds like your talking about approximately a 12 hour window or so. Certainly that isn't ideal, however it isn't horrible either. Females in fact are in heat and capable of breeding for much longer than the window we all use associated with the A/I process.
I would look at several pieces of information before making your final decision on this.
Are you indeed confident the CIDR was laying out there only the last couple or few hours?
What does the A/I tech think when he/she sees the doe at the time of semen insertion? (showing signs of good heat?)
Has this doe bred in the past?
Has this doe took to A/I in the past? (If she takes every year she is more likely to handle this larger window)
How much is the straw of semen you intend to use in her? (If it is cheap like less than $1K that is easier to risk than say $5K)
If you don't breed her are you simply putting a full straw into a doe you had partnered her with because your intention was to be splitting a straw between two does? ( If so then what is the difference if you waste the half a straw on her or shoot the whole straw in one doe)
Do you have a breeder buck worthy of using and getting fawns out of? (In today's markets and with today's costs I personally feel now it is more important than ever to breed with does and bucks that really make it worth having offspring from)
These are just a few things to consider in this type of situation. It is best to think things through with a clear mind and not make a knee jerk decision. Good luck on how it all turns out for you.
