Cougars returning

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Cougars are again spreading across the Midwest a century after the generally reclusive predators were hunted to near extinction in much of the region, according to a new study billed as the first rigorous statistical look at the issue.

The findings, detailed in The Journal of Wildlife Management, showed 178 cougar confirmations in the Midwest and as far south as Texas between 1990 and 2008. While confirmed sightings of Midwest cougars were sporadic before 1990, when there were only a couple, that number spiked to more than 30 by 2008, the study shows.

Researchers said the study poses fresh questions about how humans and livestock can co-exist with the re-emerging predators, whose movements appear to be following natural dispersal instincts.

The study sorts through various reported sightings and affixes a number to those it could confirm, which is significant because...

Pretty certain we had one around last year. Sheriff had two accounts of a big, yellow cat 1/4 mile from Antler Valley and I had several fawns go missing with only hair left behind. I might be sick :(

News TODAY here in SD, This is what we are dealing with in our state because these ***** DNR biologists refused to acknowledge lions being in the Black Hills. We had the first colt killed and burried by a lion 15 years ago so they finally had to admit there was some(or according to them, maybe one). Now we have a season in just the Black Hills that has an 80 lion limit and we can't even use dogs to hunt them and the quota gets filled fast just by people calling them and following tracks in the snow and last year we didn't even have any good tracking snow. My farm is 180 miles away from the Black Hills and evry year for the past 6-8 years we have a problem lion in the area out here in open corn and wheat country. If ya see one kill it, don't just take pictures of it, kill it, SSS... They are so thick now that the deer and elk populations that once flurished are now about gone. Good for the deer breeder biz I guess, before long we'll be the only ones that will have a huntable population. Seriously, in 10 years, between the lions, wolves( we have those also that they won't asdmit), and unlimited doe licenses you'll be telling your kids about being able to go out and see countless deer during a day and they won't believe ya!

...........pretty coincidental that the mt lion population in California that was starting to eat joggers and other weirdos is not being talked about at all anymore -- and places where mt lions were very rare have to have QUOTAS on seasons............gotta shut up now.........

..........just read the clips from SDBIGBUCKS post..........but doesnt say where the cat that wandered originally came from.....SD taxpayers had to pay for the hair and poop tests...........makes a person wonder....

The one that traveled 1500 miles originated from the Black Hills of western SD and was hit by a car in connecticut. The state spends years doing studies on the lions, meanwhile they keep eating all the states deer and elk. This is another true story, our ***** state DNR biologists spends thousands of taxpayers dollars trying to figure out why the elk population in Custer State Park went from 2,000 to 200, meanwhile for the SECOND YEAR IN A ROW, THE DARTED ELK THAT ARE BEING COLLARED FOR "STUDIES" ARE BEING CHASED RIGHT UNDER THE CHOPPER AND KILLED!!! Duh, which way did they go, which way did they go??? The DNR reports that half the elk calves got killed by lions and I heard from one of friends who works for that Dept. that of the 30 collared, 16 were CONFIRMED lion kills but only ONE of the 30 ACTUALLY survived until fall, I suppose the 14 just decided to jump off a cliff and kill themselves, pretty good chance lions killed them also and they were never confirmed lion kills, well maybe the wolves that don't exist could have gotten a few too. This is what happens when your DNR gets taken over by Greenies, can't all the wildlife just get along and be happy little critters????

Like Bob Hanson states in the comments, "would an open season on these cats be the only answer"???

Well BOB, I guess we could have the HSUS go in and capture them with a butterfly net and spay and neuter them all, WOW....

This is the last sentence in the story, "Of the 30 calves tagged in Custer State park last year, 16 were killed by mountain lions. Researchers are monitoring the area to see if a recent lion hunting season will help".

I'm afraid this is the direction our whole countries game and fish departments are heading, scary to say the least.

........my thoughts too.......I am really glad I didnt pursue a career working for the game and fish in ND like I went to college for two years for..........
