Coughing fawns

I would assume pnumonia. They look good, consume a lot of feed and water, but have a chronic cough. Any obvious answers, any good water-soluable antibiotics? I do have some oxytetracycline...odd thing is that I have 16 fawns, 8 in each of two pens. Only one has some coughers and the other has no signs, and the two pens are nose-on-nose.

Phillip,

Worms can cause coughing in deer. Have a fecal done. Just an idea.

Great, Jack. Thanks for the input. I did run those pens on wormer about 2 weeks ago, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt. Thanks again.

I'm with Jack, possible Lung Worm. This happend to me last year. Treated for three days for Pnumonia and no change. A cattle man said it was lung worms. Treated with Ivomec pour on, and the coughing stopped. Hope this helps. Allen

Did you run them through the chute or what?? these are not bottle fed

Mine was bottle fed so it was not a problem using the pour on. For the ones that are not bottle fed and to small for the chute I run them into a holding stall in front of the chute. 28" by 60" I open a 8"by 8" inspection door and use a syringe ( without needle) like a squirt gun to apply the pour on. If done in the dark (small red light) it is very effective.

Phillip you can also use is on the feed. Mix the dosage in a spray bottle with water. Spread the feed out on a clean surface, spray the feed and allow the alcahol content to evaporate. Then feed.

Lung worms- extremely rare in tx but pneumonia is approx 75% of our cases. I love LS 50 in the water. 1 bottle-75mg per 100 gallon trough for 7-10 days. God bless and good luck

I to had the same problem with a 2 yr old doe, I treated for pnumonia and had no change. I then used the Ivomec pour on and the coughing stopped.
