Is there a way to coyote proof/dog proof your pens which makes it virtually impossible for one to get in? (other than just killing them all). Thank you.

Predetor Wire! Predator Wire! Predator Wire!

Then put a hot wire around your pen. You should have no worries.

I also use a guard donkey that free ranges around my pen. Has worked for me so far.

Any fence supplier..just get 24-36 inch wire..hog ring it to the 3 or 4th strand from bottom..

If you have put your fence on the inside of your posts as most do...you can attach barb-wire to your posts on the outside at ground level around the total perimeter of your pen. This will help deter animals from digging in. This barb-wire used in conjuction with an electric fence will do the trick.

My fix was 2 strands of 11,000 volt hot wire at the bottom (one at about 10" and the next at about 25") and then 2 strands at the top for climbing animals (bears, ect.) You will need at least a 36 jewel unit and have it well-grounded with a half dozen 8' cooper ground rods and then directly grounded to the fence also. You will never have a problem ever again! 100% effective for me. I went from several coyotes and up to 5-10 bears that needed shoot a year to zero problems overnight and nothing since for 2 years. You may find the occasional small animals will die when they touch the wire so maintaining a clear fence will take some minimal maintenance. You can buy a remote that will tell you at all times if anything is touching the wire. This remote is quite handy for me (tree limbs, dead animals, pile of poo where the poacher accidentally touched the wire :D, ect.). You always know. Works like a dream!;)

I use hot wire for bear, For yotes i take a 2 foot piece of fence take 6inches of it up the deer fence and use hog rings to hook it to the deer fence, lay the rest of the fence out on the ground and bury it or let the grass grow up threw it. When you are done, whatever is walking on the outside of your pen is really walking on the fence. When a yote starts diggin he will run right into the fence and give up. I still use a hot wire but with the fence under the outside of the pen it is not needed. Hot wire for people and the couple bears that have been spotted around here!!!

you can also lay chicken wire on the ground just outside of you pens, cant dig. once the grass grow it will hold it in place. or my favoret is win. .270 it will get the job done good luck

I installed an electric fence wire at 8" and 40" from the ground and it works well. I found some 6" stand off insulators that nail right to the wooden posts.

One of our upcoming episodes will show applying wire on the outside of the fence to prevent dig outs. Probably in about 2-3 weeks that will air.

We do the same technique but with 36" wide hardware cloth. We bend it 12" up and it lays 24" out. We cover it with dirt and/or crushed rock for a nice border around the fowl pens.

We have had one gray fox dig, and then gave up. We haven't lost a bird yet!

We also run the hardware cloth up the first 36" on the coop/pen walls. This prevents coons from bunching the fowl up in a corner then reaching through regular poultry wire and grabbing the fowl.

Coons will work in groups to "herd" whatever is in the coop/pen into a corner where other coons are waiting on the outside. The hardwire cloth for the first 36" up the fence "wall" may be the answer for those who are having problems with coons attacking fawns.

Good Luck!

Hi there. Just wanted to let you know that I am currently using a solar powered fencer, with a single strand about 6" off the ground. Had coyotes circling the pen constantly until I put this system in place 2 months or so ago. I have cameras all around my pen and the "cruising" has stopped. I have a feeling that a few have gotten zapped and felt it wasn't worth the bother. Only problem where I live is that we get a lot of snow and once the wire is covered, it grounds itself out and doesn't work. I'm going to put a few more strands above the 6" one and just connect to a higher one depending on snow level. The unit is a gallagher s17. My pen is only 3 acres, so you may need a bigger size

I use a 3 strand hotwire, one 6",12", and 30" off the ground. Haven't had any problems in 4 years. I have a solar panel and a 25 mile charger. Charger is hooked to a car or marine battery and hook your solar panel to the battery. It has worked good for me.
