I have a fawn with crepitus ( subqutainous gas ) around her chest. I basically brought her back from the dead she was so dehydrated. ( see almost dead fawn) she is eating well and moving well and is alert and doesnt seem to be in pain. Should I worry about this She is on Pen G

SC Emphysema is a $10 word and a common occurrence when there has been damage to the airway.. especially the trachea.. It feels like bubble wrap under then skin :) If the crepitus is not getting any bigger ,then the initial defect is likely healed or doing ok.. If it continues to fill up with air (crepitus) then you may have to explore where the defect may be (surgery) Majority of the time, it just takes time for the air to go away.. if Long term pen... keep on probiotics.. Good Luck!! God bless!!!

I'm afraid of gas gangreen as all things that point to gas under the skin point to that.

it runs from her shoulder to her hip but is worst in the shoulder area. I and following it up with clendmyicin ( sp?) for 10 days and hope for the best. She is getting more agressive with the bottle so we will see.

Gas gangreen is caused by Clostridium bacteria which is likely Cl. Chauvei (Black leg).. A fawn with it would be close to death and not doing too good, pen is the only drug that will treat it. With gas gangreene, muscles would be affected too likely and cause hardening of the muscles.. However, I would love for a professional to look at it and rule out tracheal trauma that continues to pump more air under the skin.. Dont stop what your doing but I would place Trauma over blackleg.. just a recommendation without seeing the little guy :) Clindamycin is very strong on the body for fawns and you will need probiotics for sure

if it was trachea trauma could it heal on it's own? If this was a high dollar fawn I could see paying for exploritory surgery but since this fawn wont ever make me any money I can only go as far as a free consolt will get me. It sucks but it is reality.

Harley, could tubing it have damaged the throat area in general?

i doubt it, I noticed some bubbles under the skin when I first found it before I tubed it. I guess there is always the possibility I may have made something worse she is slowing getting better each day I went out this morning and she jumped up and ran to me to get to the bottle. So we will see I guess. I think I will remain in a holding pattern as long as she continues to improve.

she is continuing to improve I hope it has healed on it's own. I dont notice any more bubbles but not any less either.

force/tube feeding is the number one cause in fawns.. not beating you on this, I have done this in one of my fawns before on a tough hospital case :), they heal quickly, good luck, God bless

joe see post #7 there was gas under her skin when I found her out in the pen almost dead before I tubed her. I'm not saying I didn;t make anything worse but I dont thing so. On the bright side she is now growing like a weed and the bubbles under the skin is getting less and less everyday. This morning they were almost non existant.

Great job uncle and forgive me about saying you caused any trauma ;).

thanks and no problem didn't mean to sound defensive Lord knows I've screwed up more times than I can count. I would still like to know what caused it, but I certainly aint going to cut her open since she is doing so well now LOL went home at noon to feed and caught her nibbling on some clover so we are on our way.
