CWD testing requirements

It was just getting my goat today on what we have to test on the CWD program.  A thought just came to me about this.  My question is why do we have to test any more that the State we live in.  We should not have to test any more than the DNR does.  If 1 or 2 percent is good enough for them it should be good enough for us.  There is not a State that tests more than 5 percent of the wild deer and elk.  Fact is it's a lot less than that.

I think this industry should be pushing for less testing period on CWD.

The response from officials would be that is not enough testing to find CWD on high fence facilities.  We sure could throw that back in the faces of the rule making departments.  I'm very disgusted we now have to test 12 month animals.  I slaughtered 45 deer last year for the family and then got the bill for CWD testing on animals we were eating which was 4500.  That is absolutely insane.

I remember the word from our people in charge was we can change thing we dislike later.  Boy I would like to see that change but I'm sure we will not be able to change one thing in the CWD program.  Government just keeps piling it on in this industry.  Sorry for my vent but I'm sick of this.

Jack, I'm right there with ya! My Missouri Department of Constipation said I would have to get HIS permission to kill MY deer for ME to eat!!! WTF

I told him I did NOT have to get his Permission to

Kill MY Cows

Kill MY Chickens

Kill MY Turkeys

So WHY would I ask HIM PERMISSION to do **** with MY FRICKIN ANIMALS!!!

I'm just sick of this SH#T!

The last I heard was this summer sometime.I would like to know the latest on this as well.

Well if the program standards are opened it is my opinion we will only be handed crumbs to let us feel we won something.  That is how it worked in Montana rule making for our industry.  I really feel we should only have to test the same percent's for CWD that the States feel CWD testing is worth to them on wild deer.  If their 1 or 2 percent is adequate for them testing wild deer it should also be good enough to find CWD in our herds.  The fact that most of us have been in the program for five to fifteen years should allow some relief in testing requirements.  It should be pushed for by our industry representatives.

The costs of these programs is just getting out of hand.  Our feed costs go up, our testing fees go up, cost of production goes up but it seems our product price stays the same or goes down.  We as an industry can't continue with these rules on testing for CWD.

Jack, I'm afraid that's exactly what they want. In SD we can drop all testing and can still move anything in state but of course have to test 100% of everything to stay certified to be able to sell anything out of state.

Yes they have us over a barrel on testing that is why we as an industry have to change the CWD rules on testing nation wide in the Federal program.  We also have to get in the rules State Vets can't override the Federal rules and make them more strict on CWD testing requirements.  You don't see cattle people testing all their animals even though their animals can get wild animals sick with TB and Brucellosis.  We would not have some of these diseases if cattle were not here as the disease were brought in with cattle.  Heck cattle always have something crop up disease wise but it is handled differently that our deer diseases.  One should ask why is that?

Why does one State allow the producer to collect the tissue samples and send them in and here like so many other States a Vet has to collect the samples.  It's all about the money produced off our backs.

I talked to the State today and they are not aware of any talks on the CWD program or changes to it.  Anybody have any information to contradict that.

I sure wish guys that have been in the program over the five years would be getting some relief on testing ever animal.  I've tested for fifteen years now what the XXXX.  This program just keeps getting more restrictive on deer and elk farmers. and the real question is why.  Why when States stop testing for CWD because it does nothing are we still being over regulated with these requirements?  A percent of animals would be reasonable.

I noticed a elk farmer says he has CWD resistant animals for sale checked by genetics.  Is this really available?  If so why aren't we all aware of these tests.  I would imagine it is the same as the sheep industry tests as they test them for scrapie which is nothing more than another name for CWD.

Yup...Just read the same thing....They have found a genetic makeup of deer for CWD carriers. Like the Texas cases i believe were a buck positive and the 3 of his sons found positive.  They have said all along that CWD is just Scrapies in deer!

Hey Mike your shipment went out today and will be there Thursday.

Sure makes since that it is just scrapies because they put the deer for observation over scrapie sheep infected ground in Colorado research facility in the 60's.  Thanks to these people we now have it everywhere.  But I also think it is just scrapie from sheep.

We were told the standards program review was put on hold because USDA staff were swamped this spring with the "bird flu".

Yes, we were supposed to get relief once we were certified.  That got thrown out the window.

Yes, there seems to be a genetic marker that shows that a deer may be very resistant to CWD.   Dr. Haley just sent the paper to USDA for review.

All this data was thanks to the Brakkes for allowing us to test their deer when they were depopulated.

If you go back in history, many of those areas where we hunt elk today were once summer grazed by sheep.  Years ago, I hunted just north of Estes Park, in the area they called the "sheep pens".  An old cabin still stood there where the sheep herders stayed.

Dr. Miller testified in Brakkes lawsuit that deer could get scrapes from sheep.   It's funny the wildlife people aren't hollering at the sheep industry and trying to regulate them more.

Gary Olson

Gary if sheep were naturally in the wild they would be hollering at them. Wildlife people just hate that we raise animals that in their opinion only belong in the wild. It's all horse crap of course.

Your exactly right Gary, farmed deer keep getting better and the wild ones are disappearing from too many antlerless tags and coyotes, wolves and mountain lions eating all the fawns that are born. Almost every states deer populations are going backwards and they can't figure out why, they just try and blame us and everything else they can. They hate any type of commercial hunting unless it's them taking in money for the deer we landowners feed. Here in South Dakota they even have Custer State park, all high fenced. As many as 16,000 applicants for a handful of bull elk tags. Most people would love to hunt a quality fenced farm if it was free other then the license cost.

Is that the State park that took the fence down and moved out 600 or more head and just drove them outside of the park because the park couldn't hold that many elk even though the elk had a 40% CWD problem?  The fact that the officials could release that many elk knowing that 40% could be infected with CWD just proves they really don't consider CWD a real issue.  It proves by the fact these elk could reproduce to that amount even with CWD that it will not wipe out the animals.  If they had to reduce the number in the park then CWd isn't the killer they put out to the public when they talk about it in game farms.  Can you say two faced jerks.

Jack, They let down the fence at wind cave National park which borders Custer state park, Wind Cave doesn't allow hunting, Custer state park does(well it barely does, they only issue one bull tag now because the mountain lions are now eating them in the park as fast as the cows are calving). Most of these elk crash the fence in the winter and leave Wind cave and go onto bordering private land to feed and cause damage. The landowners want them gone because they aren't able to get any landowner tags to be able to sell some hunts to make up for the damage. They chased them by helicopter into the rest of the Black hills and Custer state park because the whiner wildlife federation people were crying that all "their" elk were on private land and in Wind cave.  Just think what would happen if I took an airplane and started chasing deer onto my land for my clients!!! I sure can say 2 faced jerks.

And all this was funded by the RMEF.  And they condemn us for shooting pen raised animals.  They are hypocrites.

Yah, Brilliant idea, cut the fence and chase out the highest population of CWD infected animals in the country out onto the landscape. They must really have some under qualified "biologists" working in that camp. It's a good ole boys club, have a buncha volunteers who actually believe they are really doing something put together a banquet and raise money to pay all the non profit's "over educated under experienced employees",. These groups are all alike, use a warm fuzzy name like the Wildlife Federation, Quality deer management Assoc., Rocky Mt. elk foundation, Ducks Unlimited, etc. and suck money off people who don't know any better about what really happens to the $$ they contribute.
