I'm looking for recommendations on a dart gun. Just looking for ease of use and capable of handling most needs. Thanks in advance.

Yep, that's the same on I use. It is so simple to operate and no propblem at all hitting your target at 30 plus yards with a little practice and once you get the amount of pumps figured out at certain distances, it really is amazing the shots you can make. I also have a co2 pistol that I thought was alright until I got this rifle, now the rifle is all I use. Useful and affordable.

I have that same rifle and I love it! With 1.5cc darts I easily dart deer across 100 ft. pens with 6 to 7 pumps. 2.0 cc darts drop pretty fast though. Practice for about 20 minutes and you'll be a pro.

Define your needs!

Sometimes I dart wild deer at 80m.

I use a custom barreled paxarms (New Zealand) for this(beyond 40m).

For most "captive" work CO2 is more than enough & I love my x caliber.

Pneu dart or Dan inject?(there are other good brands too).

It comes down to choice & avaliability of support.

Most are equal but I'd say dan inject gives better support .(outside of the states,& I dont own a dan inject rifle,so no bias).I do use one at our capture courses & they'll put pneu darts into a tennis ball all day at 40m.

I wish they made a "non pressurised" 13mm dart so we could use them for research & safe work practices(pressurised darts are difficult on government jobs).

I use a Pneu dart mostly but I resent the support we get down here.I guess the market is big enough in the states,to not bother with us.

For all round use a CO2 in Pneu dart or dan inject should do everything you need in captive deer.

Cheers Sharkey

After I read this and looked at the CO2 guns it got me thinking. Has anyone tried or thought about converting a paint ball gun into a dart gun. Im talking making a different barrel the correct diameter, and then putting a pressure control valve so you could change pressure for different distances. You would just muzzle load the darts and fire like regular. Idk may be stupid idea but if you have a high quality paint ball gun it would be cheaper to get different barrel than a whole dart gun.

I started out with the pump and it did a fine job. Especially if i was only darting one deer. If I was darting more than one they figured out real quick what it meant when I was pumping the gun for the next shot and it would be harder to get close enough for the next shot. It was also an open sight gun which made it less acurate on longer shots.

I have since went to the cartridge firing gun and love it compared to the pump. It is quieter when firing than the pump, I darted three bucks last year from 20yrds that were all standing within 5 yrds of each other. The only one that would run when the shot went off was the one that got hit by the dart. I darted all three within a minute or two and I didnt have to move from where I was standing. This gun is around $700.

This gun is by all means not the best. It all depends on how much you can afford.

I also use the cartridge firing gun and love it. It has 5 power settings and with the medium power cartridge(green), I can shoot from 10 to 50 yards with EXTREME accuracy. It comes with a scope, a 5 or 6 round clip, and the barrel breaks in the center for easy loading. I absolutely love this gun and have often said it was the best money I'd ever spent in/with/on my deer business.

Wished I could remember the brand/model...I'm not home at the present, but I know it cost like $745 or something like that.

If you think your deer are worth a lot of money and you are breeding deer in a captive environment / pens. I would highly recommend a CO2 dart gun over a cartridge fired dart gun, yes they are a lot more expensive but are worth the money for the following reasons.

They are low impact systems (More Humane)

They are more accurate

They are more consistant

They are a lot more quite

They are more versatile (can change barrel sizes from 11mm to 13mm, use various types or darts)

They require virtually no maintenance

Not regulated by federal law (do not require going through an FFL)

The three top models of CO2 dart guns on the market right now are the Dan Inject JM Special or JM Standard or the Pneudart X Caliber. The Dan Inject JM Special is the only dart gun that can be used either as a pistol or rifle. All three are good CO2 systems!! Well worth spending the money, they will last you forever.

I shoot the pneudart 389 and have been well pleased. We use it on shots from 20 to 50yds with good accuracy. On close shots we use a blow gun. The 389 is a cartridge fired gun and can be adjusted for impact by adjusting a 5 position knob like Mark mentioned and can be fine tuned by changing cartridge strength. Some of the cheaper priced CO2 guns can loose some power in cold weather when the co2 cartridge gets low. I've heard that isn't a problem if you spend the money for the higher quality guns like the X caliper. Rick
