I darted a doe yesterday that I just brought home from Indiana. She had a yellowish green discharge from her nose and some gunk in the corner of her eye...she was also coughing bad. I darted her with Draxin in the hind quarter with a gel collared dart and the dart stuck in her and disbursed. Today I checked on her and the dart was still in her and the doe doesn't seem to pay any attention to it. She was feeling better today and not coughing but now she is scouring and like I said the dart hasn't came out and I wanted to do a follow up tomorrow with another dose of Draxin. I can't get a hold of her to pull the dart so I was wondering what some of your thoughts were about what I should do.. I did take a fecal sample in tonight for the scouring but I can't get the results until tomorrow for that so I am not sure if the Draxin will be effective for that or not. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Draxin is an antibiotic and will not help scouring...cause maybe, but not cure.

Question...is the dart flopping, or is it somewhat rigid? I would be concerned that the dart might have penetrated past the needle if it has not dropped off.

Yes the dart is flopping and just seems to be hanging from her hide. I didn't shoot her hard at all. I just wonder if the gel collar made it in the skin and won't release?

Just keep an eye on the dart and her for the cough. As far as her being loose i would not worry about that for a few days. Alot of times the stress of the move will get them loose. I bet you get her on your feed and some probiotics to help her through the feed change she will be pellets in a few days!

The gel collars are usually pretty good about dissolving. I would go ahead and dart with the follow up of draxin to make sure you don't have a gap in dosing. If that dart doesn't fall out soon you will have no choice but to sedate and remove. Given the fact that this deer had what sounds like very serious symptoms, I would hold off on sedating and treat as if the darting worked as planned. If it doesn't fall out she is sure to find a way to get it out, she just needs to get better. You should consult with your vet, since the vet can come out and look. You obviously need to keep a close eye to watch for infection.

Thanks Mike and Daniel for your advise. I will go ahead with my follow up dart of Draxin tomorrow and just keep a eye on that dart that's stuck in her. I think you are right about taking care of her symptoms first and then addressing the dart when she is stronger. I hope the scours are just from the stress of the move and not anything more. Again... Thanks for helping cause when you put many minds together...we can solve anything.

I just got the results of the fecal sample back from the vet and they said that she has stomach worms. What would be safe to use for a dewormer with a pregnant doe.

Your choice...Ivomec Plus.Safeguard pellets, Just not Valbazen!!!

I think i would be a little shy on getting more animals from that same place!

Thanks again Mike... Someone was telling me if the egg count is high In the fecal sample ( like over 10 ) Worming them could still result in losing the fawns even if you use a wormer that is safe for pregnancy. Any truth to that?

Hopefully if this don't turn out very good...that guy I bought this doe from will work with me on this.

Are you sure you didn't use a barbed dart?

Nope it wasn't barbed... It did finally come out today.. I'm thinking it was an older dart and the gel wasn't as effective anymore.
