Looking for help and advice on darting a buck that even given 5 cc of a darting mixture seems as if he "sleepwalking" not to go down. buck has gone down once and or twice before, but this last three times i have tried he seems to smart to not want to let this work! any advice PLEASE! thanks all!

I have these type of bucks once in a while. They are smart enough to walk it off! What ratio are you using? Maybe you need to increase the telezol? Be careful giving him to much. If you already gave him 5cc, I wouldn't give anymore.

What is your mixture and ratio thereof?

If you cut down on the amount of Xylazine you put in your bottle of Telazol, it will be more potent/effective.

Hey Jeremiah...thanks i use a 6 to 1 ratio and he just seems to not want to go down....UGH! Think of anything more and thanks for the reply! Love your website very cool!:)

Thanks Mark.....I use a 6-1 ratio and he just walks it off! anything else keep up with me and thanks again!

I mix mine 5-1 on my difficult big boys. I also have a few big body difficult does that get the higher concentration. Usually 2cc at 5-1 gets them down or groggy enough to get 1 more cc in them and they are snooring within 10 minutes!

Thanks Todd, this guy is making me nuts even at 6-1 with 5cc's he wont go down. the last two times he was out like a rock but this time no way hes too smart! He is a big two year old and wise for his age! Appreciate the help!

Carter - I would first try a 5 to 1 ratio, and use a 3cc dart. That has always taken down my most difficult, but sometimes just barely. So because of the ''just barely part'', don't be afraid to use a 4 to 1 ratio and then use a 2cc dart if the 5 to 1 and 3cc dart don't work. Bet a dollar that the 4 to 1 will put his butt down, at least enough to sneek up and push another 1/2cc in if need be.

Know that there is a significant difference in knock down power between the 5 to 1 ratio and 6 to 1 ratio. But like I said, go to 4 to 1 if need be.

And it's probably just me, but it ''seems'' as though I have better luck in the dart's effectiveness when I put it in the neck/shoulder area. One definitely has the perpendicular shot presented quicker and more often in this region.

Good luck Carter!

It cannot be frozen! Who ever told you that failed to tell you that freezing telazol diminishes its potency after only 3-4 days. Before you begin adjusting your mixture and dosage rates, let's determine what you are actually giving the deer. Is your xylazine 100mg/ml, 300mg/ml or 450mg/ml?? What size bottle of Telazol are you re-constituting? How much does the buck actually weigh? What is the ambient tempertature during darting. When was the buck fed last prior to darting?

Scott, I have bin freezing xylazine telazol for yrs. Have had it frozen for months on end and have seen no difference in using that to a newly mixed bottle. Thats how I store mine every time I mix one up and didn't use it all. Not saying you are incorrect but thats the way I was told to store it,and not to store it on shelf or in fridg . Works for me...

Scott, I have to agree with Red Cedar on this one. We always freeze any unused cocktail and have for 5 + years and have never seen any down side to doing it and have frozen it and used it a year later to move shooters and had no problems.

This is how the folks showed me when I started and they all have 20+ years of raising deer under thier belts.

But as ALWAYS this is ONLY what works for me on my farm!

Thanks and BEST of Luck!:)

Carter - All my references to mixes, ratios, etc, were made considering/assuming you were using 100mg/ml Xylazine and the 5mg Bottles of Telazol, which is what the VAST majority use, but it is wise not to assume, so just wanted to clarify.

I also have frozen the mix of 100mg/ml with 5mg of Telazol for months...thawed it out and used it with all the success of a fresh mixed bottle.

I keep mine in the gun case for up to several months. My experience has been that it actually gets stronger the longer it is mixed up. I used to freeze it when I first started but not anymore.

I too have used frozen X/T mixture, but I had some tested in a gas chromograph and the results suggested potency diminished from day 3 and continued to drop thereafter. I am not going to tell you it becomes usless after freezing, but I will suggest that using frozen mixture is not as potent as freshly mixed and dosage rates may change accordingly. Just Saying......

20 years ago I suspect they would have been using xylazine/ketamine not telazol (zolitel)/xylazine. Thankfully the new drug is smoother on the animals.

Cheers Sharkey

Ps storing telazol in plastic, including darts will quickly denature the zolazapam.

Also, try darting him at dusk. They seem to be more relaxed at dark and lay down faster. Stay away from him for 20 minutes. If you scare him before then your chances of going out are much less.
