Hello, need information, I have only been raising deer for about 8 months, So saying I know nothing rings volumes.

My one year has cut the bottom side of his beam about 1 inch from the tip. Its been 24 hrs. and its still bleeding. not heave but bleeding. Two questions first and most important should i let him be and just keep a close watch on it. or dart and attend to it now.

2nd question what can I expect as far as antler growth at this point?

Had one damage this spring was told to keep an eye on it and leave it alone just watch to make sure flies aren't bugging it and watch for infection that's what i did and mine healed just fine other then he stopped growing for the most part on that side but like i said it was early this spring would think yours would be fine just keep an eye on it

Thanks, got home from work today expecting to see it dried up. NOT, still bloody looking and found two small ares of blood in pin. Got me concerned.

Blood is a fly magnet. Flies will lay eggs and you have maggots which will work their way under the velvet. An antler infection can kill them. You can clean the wound and put on a spray bandage. Also put swat, a fly repellent they use on horses all around it.

Unless it is completely healed over very soon, this is probably what you will have to do. It is the time of year when the flies are getting bad.

If this buck is tame and touchable you can first cut off the velvet that is hanging so it does not get tore off later and cause problems. Get some pine tar and blood stop powder from you local Tractor supplyt store. Put some pine tar all around the end of that beam and the cut, Its some thick sticky stuff..No fly will get thru it..Then take the blood stop powder and put that on top of the cut. Works wonders!

This morning its scabbed over good. Looks a lot better. Oppie is fairly tame he comes when called, takes treats from hand, licks hands, but will not let you touch him for more than a split of a second. So trying to doctor on him as suggested is not gonna happen. Probable the best action is to observe for now. I got him him in a small area, so I can keep an eye on him better. I have been fogging it twice a day (early/late) to keep the flies at bay. There not to bad in the heat of the day.

Thanks guys for the replies!!!!

If you have ivermectin wormer you can mix that in the feed !/2 pd per 50 pd of feed! Use it until buck sheds velvet, it gets in bloodstream and kills fly eggs , It really works!!! Really prevents antler infections! Good luck!!

That sounds like something to always have. Where to buy?

Hi there. I had the same thing happen about 3 weeks ago. It scabbed over and healed and now he has a pretty cool 6" drop tine growing down from where it happened. I'm not saying not to treat it? Because these guys in here know a lot more than I do...just wanted to share my experience. I also had one run into the fence last year when a coyote was circling. He was only up around 2" when it happened. It split right in the middle and bled like crazy. He is fairly tame, so I would just put iodine on it every day when I gave him a treat. His antler grew straight up and crazy looking....but this year it's back to normal! I have lots of pics, just don't know how to post them on here. If you want to put your email on here, I'd be happy to send!

thanks Derek
