I have somewhat of an unorthodox request. As a hunter that started very late in life, I am interested in starting an educational program to teach new adult hunters how to hunt deer for food. The curriculum includes discussions on deer biology, habits throughout the year, safe firearm handling and shooting instruction, as well as field dressing, quartering, butchering and cooking deer.

In order to hold this class I need access to deer to teach the dressing and butchering segment. What I am looking for is one deer every month or two. Since the goal of this class is primarily to teach people how to hunt deer for food, I do not need any trophy animals and am interested in any older or unpromising deer that a farm may have. I would need to take the deer whole since the intent is to teach the entire process of processing from field dressing to fine butchering.

Are any of you able to fulfill this request? If not, might you be able to point me towards someone who may be able to assist me? Are they any legal hurdles that I am not considering? As far as I can tell, importing whole deer into Maryland is legal as long as it is not coming from a CWD positive area. The PA DNR site says that it is not a CWD positive state and I know many deer farms are certified as CWD free.

I think that this would be a very beneficial course that could introduce a lot of new people to hunting that would otherwise never start.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

I see that this has been viewed 35 times. I'm hoping that someone can at least point me in the right direction or tell me this is not possible.

Thanks in advance for anyone who is able to comment.

I don't see why some of the farms closer to you wouldn't sell you some of their call deer. Better yet call some close by preserves and tell them what you are trying to do. Maybe take your clients to them for a cheap doe hunt where they can shoot and field dress the deer right there. Might work in the preserves favor as well they may get some new hunters.

If I had a deer that was freshly deceased, I would let you have it. I am not particularly close to you, and don't lose that many deer, so I would say the likelihood of the stars aligning is not great. I agree with Virgil that finding a couple preserves near you would be the best place to start. Good luck with your venture, it sounds like a great idea!

My two cents: You may talk to some Department of Ag folks and incorporate some information about CWD, what to be aware of, proper disposal, etc. Whatever the realities of the disease, it's a hot-button issue.

Thanks to both of you for the responses.

I've been having quite a difficult time getting hold of people at many of the farms in southern PA near Cecil County MD where I plan on holding the class. It seems that much of the contact information is out of date or that voicemails and emails are checked infrequently.
