Hi all,

We have had a problem going on for some time now and until now have attributed it to mites or some form of lice. Until recently we have had no fatalities. Yesterday we had an adult do (was the worst with the hair loss looked pink from bare skin showing) die. I have our back up buck in with the same pen as dead doe and he is 2 (was nice 4x4 yearling) and he is not even growing yet. All the rest of the deer except 2 adult does look like hell. I can't even recognize my own doe when I look her in the face. Please help quickly we cannot afford to lose anymore deer! Have treated with pour on meds for mites and lice to no avail (treated 2 months ago), Thanks in advance

Noah,

Biting lice are very tough to kill. There are a few different varieties, most being region specific. Most inject-able wormers even in high dosages do not kill them. One thing you may find to be effective is to mix a solution of permithirn and diesel fuel and spray or wipe on the animals. This application will need to be repeated about every 7 days or so for about a month.

Typical infections from biting lice weaken the immune system and most likely cause a secondary infection of some kind. Good luck.

Noah we had a amish guy up my way that had a problem like what your talking about turned out to be the feed the copper level was too high. It was a mistake at the feed mill. Not sure if it's the same but food for thought good luck

All our deer were biting and pulling their hair out at the beginning of spring this year. Turned out that we had sand fleas. We sprayed the entire pen with a mixture of water, vinegar, and lemon dish soap. Within 48 hours the fleas were dead and they stopped the hair pulling. They all now have beautiful summer coats.
