Deer on Florida Island

Hello,

I was searching the internet to try and find out how much property was needed to have wild deer live on and this seems to be the place to ask for a knowledgeable answer.

I am looking to possibly buy a small island (40 acres) in a lake in Florida. I do not want to have to be there to take care of them although I would be happy to occasionally bring some corn or plant some food plots for them.

The island has several acres that are high and dry, the majority of it is considered wet lands but not swamp.

I am sure I risk them leaving the island especially if there is not enough food. The main land is about 600 feet from the island.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Mike

Mike, I guess they would stay if (like you said they had enough feed......but you can be certian they will swim off the island to main land........sounds like it would be a lot of work.........how would you put tue food plots in....and how would you get the feed to them?.......everything would have to be hauled in by boat...yikes......

Thanks Dennis and Brett for your input. It sounds like it will be difficult (rather impossible) to keep them on the island and I think it would be too expensive and too difficult for me to install a tall enough fence.

As for putting food plots in, I have a friend with a small tractor that I would have to move to the island to make the plots. Yes it would be a pain.

Since the deer can swim from the island so easily is there any way that if I put food plots in that they would attract deer to come to the island? Is 40 acres just way too small for them to have any desire to hang out?

Thanks,

Mike

I am curious if I did fence the island how many deer would be able to thrive?

Thanks,

Mike

I'm from Florida and deer especially bucks will move to islands to avoid hunting pressure from surrounding areas. If you want to hunt this land I'd suggest a couple good feeders, a couple large outback feeders you needed to fill only a couple times a year that bears wouldn't be able to destroy and minimal pressure. You will basically create a sanctuary for them, but with only 40 acres you will blow them out very easily. They will wade out and feed off water grasses etc so if you fence you will cut off part of their food supply. There are some islands in Florida that have been overtaken with Alligators so I'd do my research before buying. Gators or Bears and you will not have deer. If you want to high fence and raise deer buy something high and dry.
