Hi everyone! New to the forum and getting ready to raise my first deer. I am building a pen 300'x150' and am curious how many deer I might be capable of raising in that size enclosure? Any help in all aspects of deer farming would be helpful. Have been researching for weeks but I think the best knowledge would come from this forum. Thanks!!

Check your state regs. Some states regulate how many deer you can have on a piece of land. In NY we are only allowed 6 deer for 45,000 square feet. Of course we are talking about NY LOL

So if I'm understanding correctly the number of deer in a pen is dependant on whether you want some sort of forage to grow in the pen to help offset feed cost.

Not necessarily to offset the feed cost, (although it could if you planted the right stuff,) but because your ground will drain better, be a better place for your deer to lay down in, and to just generally look better.

To many deer in a small pen can cause sickness and problems. Unless you plan on cleaning poop and pee up I would keep the numbers down in a small pen like this. If you start off with say six deer or so and see how your pen holds up you may be able to put more in and be fine. It depends on each individaul pen and the conditions as to how many deer they can hold. I would say 10_12 would be fine but I would start off with less and see how things hold up. To many deer in one pen can cause problems with mud, disease and also look bad to others.

up to 10 deer should not be a problem, if you have good drainage you will still have plenty of vegitation for them to eat, by spring it may get a little sparse, but your feeding good quality hay then anyhow

Thanks everyone for the willingness to spread helpful information to a new guy starting out! Very appreciative!!
