Hello, I am new to the site and have developed an interest, in raising deer.

I live in Mississippi, have about 4 acers I am looking at refencing to raise a few fallow deer on. I currently have some Boer Goats, but I am entertaining the Idea of selling and refenceing for deer. It will not be a commercial operation just a hobby! In the 4 acers about 1.5 is wooded and brushy with a creek runing through. I am looking at exotics. How many deer would a place this size hold? What is the best kind of deer to raise. Remember this is just for enjoyment? I had thought mabey fallow?

In Mississippi, the MDWFP has plenary authority over enclosures fo both native and non native animals. Although you could possibly get a permit for exotics from MDA, it is most likely that your enclosure would not be allowed due to its small size. Mississippi regulations presently state an enclosure must be a minimum of 300 acres. The Southeastern Game Rancher's AWssociation is presently active in getting these laws changed.

Fallow, Axis, Reds, Sika could be considered in small enclosures. You could raise between 10-25 animals, depending on species.

300 acers! This would explain why you see no one raising deer here. There are few people with that amount of acreage. most of the large tracts here are 80 to 160 with a very limited number of tracts higher than that. Fallow is one of the species that sparked an interest.
