Do I have a problem?

This morning as one of my fawns was pooping, I noticed some red stuff in there and thought she was passing some blood with her stool. As it turns out, it was her butt hole turned inside out. I'm guessing the last bit of her colon came out some. I was freaked!! It did go back in after a minute or two but now I'm wondering if this is the beginning of some bigger issue. Is this something that happens occasionally or am I in trouble?

Possible prolapsed rectum. If it continues and stays out you will need to get a vet to sew it up. Good luck

Bummer!!! That wasn't the reply I was hoping to get. Is there any hope?

Woody I have heard this happening before....I think it is a pretty simple fix......the vet should be able to take care of it pretty easy.

Woody I think your alright. If it was a prolapse it would remain out, not go back in. If it does come out SOME TIMES you can push it back in and it will stay. But there are a few that won`t stay and needs to have a stitch or two to hold it there until it heals. If they have to push hard that`s what makes it pop back out.

Exactly Mitch...

I have a skunk and when they descent them... They need to get in there:eek: to do it...

If it stays out push it in...keep flies away with swat around it ...not on it (Where it can't touch the part that comes out)

If it comes out further or stays out and starts drying...it can cause problems .

Try and keep stool on the loose side, if it strains it could get worse.

It looks terrible... but normally is not as bad or scary as it sounds.

Best of luck

Man I can't win. She just got over the scours about a week or 10 days ago. I thought with her stool like logs things were going good. Now I have to loosen her up a little. Is there a happy medium? I have another one that is just a month old and she gives pellets. Not pellets in a log, regular adult looking pellets. They both get goats milk 4 times daily along with all the grape leaves they can eat. The smaller one will eat grapes and strawberries but the one with the rectum problem won't touch them. What can I give her to help her but not make her too loose? I have a question about my feeding routine but I will make that on another post.

Woody if the rectal mucosa is the only thing effected and it's not constant you could probably get by with a sugar bath or tying to get a sugar solution just into the rectum . If it is or becomes an actual prolapse then you'll need some purse string stitching . I'd try the sugar water first and see what happens . Just a thought !!

Wooden, are you saying to give her a sugar water enema? How much sugar to water ratio? I've been watching her closely since yesterday but it hasn't happened again. I've tried feeding her a bunch of grapes and strawberries to maybe soften her up some, but the little bugger eats only a few and then clamps her jaws TIGHT!!! She has become a little softer since but, it goes back and forth from pellets to a log to pellets again. I'm hoping it was once and done.

Ross, I`ve forgot now but what does the sugar do? I had a doe a few years ago that prolapsed giving birth and after the vet was done putting things back in place told me to sugar water bath her a few times. I just looked at her like, SAY WHAT? I forgot what she told me the reason was. Maybe because I lost her 4 days later with all the care possible. TOO much infection to overcome.

Woody , first off have you wormed this fawn ? Many times a rectal prolapse is common in critters that are heavily infected with parasites . NOT ALWAYS but often !! Yes give a sugar water enema ! We always used a 3 to 1 mixture. 3 parts water to 1 part sugar in our calves so I'm assuming that mixture would also work on a fawn . Mitch I'm assuming the sugar gives the muscles like the sphinter muscle tone and strengths them as well as acts as a lubrecant as the sugar reacts to lessen the strain when pooping !! Also some oral feeding of olive or vegetable oils will help soften the stool !! Just a thought !!

Wooden, yes she was wormed with Ivomec plus injection. Also she was treated with Albon because one of the other fawns had coccidia in a sample I gave to the vet. She wasn't near that one but my vet said to treat all of them anyway, even though their samples were clean. I haven't seen any sign of it happening again but I will give her the sugar treatment just to be on the safe side. I also cut back on the amount of milk and have been giving them grapes and strawberries and their stool is somewhat softer. Thank you very much for the advice. I will write the sugar treatment down for further use. Thanks again.

Adjust the mixture of goat milk with water. It may take you a couple of days to get the right mixture. Stool gets loose as you add more water than called for. I gather you use the powder goat milk and mix it with water? If the stool gets too loose, use just a half of teaspoon Pepso and keep trying to get the right mixture. I find that some fawns have different adjustments.
