Doe fawn looking REAL bad!!!

I have a 5 month old doe fawn....my favorite...everyone knows how it goes. She has had diarrhea for 3-4 weeks now. She has a dull, shaggy coat, dull eyes, thin...looks as bad as she could get without being dead.

I've done everything possible. Coccidia treatment, worming treatment, probiotic paste, 3 day baytril & B-comlex treatment and am now treating internally with scour halt & electrolytes. The poop sample came back clean....absolutely nothing but good bateria being passed.

My discussion with the vet...and I knew this in my heart....that it is something internal. Something is wrong with her system. So, what I'm asking....is there any hope? Don't be afraid to give it to me straight. But, on the other hand, if there is some miracle cure that I'm missing...PLEASE PLEASE share even if you want to send a private message. I'm begging anyone to help me....I'm very desperate right now and if she dies I want to feel that I did everything possible for her.

Susan,

Have you given any thought to a possible ulcer. Just a thought.

I sure wish you the very best with this little girl, always has to be the best one for some reason. Hang in there.

Yes, the ulcer suggestion did come up with the discussion with the vet. That is why she suggested the scour halt...which is basically Kaopetate...it will coat and sooth the stomach. She thought that she could have ulcers in the stomach that were irritating her digestive system and that coating the stomach would help them heal.

I don't THINK she ate anything moldy. The fawn pen where they eat is all under a roof and hay is stored under cover. That doesn't mean she couldn't have. I will ask about the mycotoxins. What kind of binder are you suggesting!

Thanks everyone!!

Susan - what about hardware disease???? Horrible to think about, but is there a chance she could have found a piece of wire, fence staple, soda can tab.....etc.?

It is possible....although, when we first got the pen done Randy and I walked the pen thoroughly twice together and picked up everything little thing we saw. I am out playing with the fawns, walking the whole pen several times a week and I always pick up anything that I see. Doesn't at all mean that I didn't miss something!

Fawns are alot like kids....they will put anything and everything in their mouths!! So I'm pretty careful about debris.

Might be worth a trip to town with her though if things don't change in the next day. I don't know that she would cooperate though. She still has a little kick to her....which is good.

I just went out to check on her just now after 2 hours. I had cleaned out her pen and put fresh bedding down..put some twigs and leaves from maple & ash trees in there and some dandelion greens which she was nibbling on when I left. I wanted to see if there was any fresh poop that I could look at since its been 24 hours with the scour halt....none. So I'm kind of hoping that maybe something is finally working???!!!

I'll be back out there between 6 and 6:30pm to feed so hopefully I get some good news then.

Still no poop after almost 6 hours. I'm hoping that it's a good sign. A couple of days ago it sounded like she was peeing it was shooting out so runny and every time she got up.

She seems fuller in the flanks....not that she looks "good". Maybe it was ulcers or something on that order and the scour halt is coating the stomach and letting it heal.

Thank you everyone for all the calls, private messages and responses on the thread today. I really appreciate your concern.

This morning she had poop the firmness of maybe soft butter....it was very soft. But after what I've seen for the last week, it is a very big improvement. There was only 2 piles of it too. She still looks absolutely horrible, but the scour halt seems to be working. Still giving 3x per day in a bottle along with some electrolytes. This is day 3 of this kind of treatment. Does anyone think I should continue with this longer or should I stop with the 3 days?

Is she on a pelleted ration? If so (for ulcer) try finding some meal feed instead of pellets-sometimes a change in micron size helps. Good luck.

I used pepto bismal mixed in with their bottle (just a few drops in each bottle) kept it up for bout two weeks and mine did fine. They get to where they like the pepto and it's sorta like breaking them from the bottle when you go back to straight formula.

Susan, have you tried any of the Target fawn paste or their whitetail deer paste? This stuff is great. It has stopped any and all scours that we have had this year. Fawns to adults didn't matter. They were cleaned up in 3 days. I believe Robbie is a rep. for them. Good luck...

I did try target paste....just started using it this summer and have had great luck with it for everything else. I tried everything until I went to the vet and she suggested the scour halt. It seems to be working....I guess I will keep doing for a few more days and then try taking her off of it. I've been keeping her inside with a heat lamp at night to keep her warm so she doesn't have to use alot of energy maintaining her body temp. It's been really cold here....snowing outside right now. I have been letting her out during the day if it is nice to browse around. She doesn't look good but she doesn't look any worse....maintaining I think. But poop is alot better. I noticed her hocks are cleaner also which is a good sign. I think she looks fuller in the flanks. I'm sure if she is getting better...it's going to be awhile yet before I see physical signs.

I had given it a thought about a mash food if she does have stomach irritation. She is on ADM pellets right now. I was wondering if I could mix up the fines that we sift off of our feed with some water and see if she would eat that. Any thoughts on that?

One more thing I've tried lately is the Target ElectroMax paste. It sure has help keep them boosted while they are getting over what is wrong at the time.

Michael - thanks for the endorsement - Susan has been using our stuff all season and I checked on her a few days ago. I am afraid the proplems her girl is facing are beyond good probiotics alone. Sounds like she is seeing some positive results from the combination of things she is using, so more power to you, Susan! Hopefully, with all of the feedback you have gotten, something or some combination of things will give your girl time to get her system back on track.

We wish you continued success!!!!!

I fought scours on and off with my deer all summer. I had multiple stool samples done and no parisites were found. Had cultures done with no abnormal levels of anything. I had a friend not far from me with the same problems. We were also feeding the ADM pellet. As soon as we(friend included)changed back to grain mixture our problem went away. Has anyone else feeding only pellet feed been having the same problems?

Yes Robbie....I've had alot of wonderful suggestions (Thank you!!). I have tried alot of them and will try others as time goes on here. My attitude is.....she was just about dead anyway so I might as well try everything!!

She actually seems a little perkier this morning. She wanted to go outside, but I'm going to wait a bit since we have about an inch of snow on the ground and it's freezing outside!! I'm not a cold lover!!

I had Peanut inside last night with her. If anyone remembers way back 1st of June, I had that tiny tiny triplet born about the size of a remote control. He's doing very well....he's my little buddy. I think he loves me just as much as my kids do....well maybe he loves me more than my 16 yr old daughter!!!

She probably liked having company last night and perked her spirits up a little. I don't know....just hope the worst is over.

I have wonderful news!!!

Today, she finally had pellet poop!!!! 3 times now. I'm so happy, but still very cautious. I don't want to get my hopes up too high, but after 6 weeks of runny poop, this seems to be something to celebrate.

I did Scour Halt in a bottle 3x times per day for 4 days and then have put in once a day since. Did the penicillin orally for 2 days at first. Target Probiotic paste (full tube) about every 4 days. Regular probiotics daily. Just started adding 1 tsp of pumpkin once a day. Lots of leaves (maple & ash), straight grass hay, alfalfa hay, still has pellets in front of her at all times and I did take fines and mix with water for a mash that she has in front of her. I let her out about 5 hours a day to browse (if it is nice enough) and she is in her pen otherwise with a heat lamp. She is on the bottle 3x per day now (about 9-10 oz per feeding). Easy way to get oral meds down her. Her flanks are full and she seems alot brighter in the eyes and perkier all around. Still looks horrible, but it's going to take some time to get the outside looking good again.

So, I can only assume that something internally was messing her up and MAYBE I'm getting ahead of it!!???

Just wanted to share the good news since so many of you called and helped me out here.....I reallly appreciate and basically used everyone's advice.
