Doe looks to have a broken leg Help!

Can anyone give some help here, our doe looks to have broken her back leg or be out of joint, looks like right at the knee joint. Doesn't seem to look like she can straighten the leg, wasn't sure if she needs to be tranq. and try to set it. Also was concerned about her being pregnant. Thanks for any help.

I recently went through this with one of my best does. It was a front leg. We knocked her down and put on a splint for a couple of weeks and she is going to be OK. After doing that I asked some of the most experience deer guys that I know and most agreed the best course of action is to do nothing. Let mother nature do the work. I would think a back leg would be more difficult to splint. Just sharing with you what I was told by people who's opinion means a lot to me. Good Luck.

Maybe off course a little, but one of my does that was severely sickened with EHD this year is walking very sore in her back end, to the point of only using three legs to move around. Her back hoofs seemed to be over extended and when she walks its almost on her dewclaws. I believe I read this is an aftermath associated with a deer infected with EHD that's survives. If anyone can add to this or suggestions would be appreciated thanks

I don't know anything about EHD... But I do know that deer are super tough. There was a doe harvested in our area a few years ago that had an old festered arrow wound in her guts. The wound was a year old. The arrow had gotten stuck in the does guts and broke off about 4 inches on either side of the doe. So she had an 18 arrow stuck in her for over a year. The amazing thing is not that she survived for a year with such a wound... She was bred, gave birth, and raised a healthy fawn that was with her the second time she was shot.

Shan, like stated let them be. I've done this with both fawns and adults and 95% of the time in three months you wont be able to tell there was even a problem. Now if bone has broke the skin your gonna have some issues and tranq is most likely needed.

AMW, what your seeing is a symptom of EHD. I would contemplate giving banamine to help with discomfort, and possibly an antibiotic to help keep immune system high while the body fights EHD.

Hope this helped, Ryan

I have 4 doe's here that had EHD and made it through 4 of only 6 that I have left after EHD, one of the doe's walk's just like your's is. I dont think there is a thing that can be done about. The rest are back to normal and you would never know how sick they were by looking at them now.

The doe will walk like that until she finishes sluffing off old hooves. We have never done anything for it and they recover just fine.
