We have a 4 year old doe that gave birth on the 13th of this month to healthy twins. We have noticed that after she eats a little she will stand there still for minutes with her head hanging to the ground, and tail tucked in. She has lost a lot of weight and is showing her ribs, and hip bones. She will eat grass that we feed her by hand and you can hear her stomach growl very loudly multiple times. Any ideas, or treatment options would be helpful.

Thank you all very much.

Are the fawns still on her or did you pull them to bottle feed? I know it's late to pull them but, if you haven't already that is the first thing I would do. The little ones will put a lot of stress on her, especially if she has something wrong with her.

Next I would get a stool sample and have it analyzed.

Also, if you don't already, I would add a good probiotic to her feed to help her absorb as much of the feed that she is eating as possible.

If you could get her in a separate pen with one or two younger does, maybe fawns from last year, that might also help. When a deer shows weakness or is sick, the other deer in with her will sometimes run her and pick on her which makes things worse.

Our go to medication is Draxxin, you can dart with it and it seems to help with a wide variety of things that may be wrong with her.

Good luck with her, hope she comes through it.

Did she fully eliminate the after birth? Could there be an infection going on like mastitis? Is it possible that she might still have a (dead) triplet inside of her?

I would knock her out and check her fully, and consider doing an antibiotic wash/******. She clearly needs a vet's help, I think.

I would also shoot her with Draxxin and consider a shot of Dexamethasone (for swelling). Talk to a medical pro.

I think as Lana said above your vet would be a good choice......I beleive she probably is having complications from the birthing process and need to be looked at very soon.......there is an infection within her somewhere.......you need to pull those fawns ASAP.......wish you the best with this....
