Dog Kill/ Aftermath

T

The Legacy Studio

We had a dog kill at 4am Saturday morning.

The dog was yipping outside the pen and the deer were banging against the fence. It was not good ..........

We lost our 3 year old white Seneca Doe.

She was no longer white.........

Our remaining brown doe was hyperventilating when I got to her and I put her up in the corral.

She is bruised, head face, neck cut all up but does not appear to have any broken legs.

She is eating and drinking.

I have added a medicated crumble to her feed.

At dusk she starts pacing up and down the gateway and will actually stand on her hind legs to try to climb out.

I plan on moving my last tame doe from a friends to put in with her that did not go thru the experience.

Any comments or suggestion for medicines of physical remidies or otherwise.

Lost our White Doe,....that bites......

:(

Thanks,

Jim

Sorry to hear of your loss Jim. Many of us have similar stories. I think your idea of putting a calm deer in with her is a good stab at calming her down...it sure can't hurt.

For the future, and just so you know, an electric fence is a great idea to battle future visits from dogs.

Also, if you witnessed this dog at your pen you need to find out who owns it. Contact your local dog catcher as well as your local Sheriff Dept. and get some reports filed.

The owner of the dog is responsible for your loss, and their home owner's insurance will cover their dog's actions.

Good luck Jim!

Vitamin B is supposed to have a calming effect on nerves. When my girl was disturbed in her pen, gave her this de-Stress paste that they give horses when moving them. It has all of the B vitamins and magnesium in it. She spat most of it out, but shortly thereafter seemed to relatively relaxed. I also spend about 5 hours with her in the pen, and this seemed to ease her into sleeping. I think that any low dose of sedative isn't such a bad idea.

Thanks,

We are going thru the process now with the sherrifs Dept. and Dog Warden.

Proper protocal on my rights to protect them are being explored and implemented.

Again thanks,

Jim

Jim,

Sorry to hear about the attack on your deer. I had the same thing happen to me about a year ago and it was ugly like you just experienced. I also gave the deer some medicated crumbles in their feed. If your deer is just cut up and bruised and just has superficial wounds I would not stress her out any more than you need to and not dart her or put her in a chute. All mine healed fine on their own, I even had one that snapped her leg and that eventually callused over and healed fine. I would just say from my experience of this happening to me that the deer needed time to be calm and heal. They are very resilient when it comes to getting banged up a little. Good Luck!
