Ever since I was a little guy I remember at Christmas time my Dad and us boys would always make sure on Xmas Eve day we would start early in the AM in the barns. We would clean EVERYTHING from the stock tanks to fresh feed in the feeders to spreading fresh straw knee deep in all the barns and pens! The smell of fresh straw and green alfalfa hay in the bunks was awesome !!! The animals loved it as well, when we would turn them back in they would run in circles in the straw like little kids, my Dad would stand there and smile, look at us and say they know it's Christmas and they deserve this!!!!

So this Christmas give your animals a little extra because " They know it's Christmas and they deserve it"!!!! And I'll bet it will make you smile also, like my Dad did. Charlie.

I love it!  Yes I'm smiling.

ATM all my Christmases have come at once, & for my animals too. I've had 3 inches of rain in the last month & am expecting another two over Christmas & Boxing day. This will really get the grass growing & set them up for another year.

On the enrichment  thing for deer. What I sometimes do on long summer days when the forecast is good, is I put out some fermented grain & sugar. Not a lot, but enough to mimic the effect from browsing on fermented fallen fruit. They love it, & I haven't seen any negative side effects. Sometimes I'll even imbibe in a few cleansing ales myself, & toast to our good fortune. Now we've had some rain on the farm, what better excuse for a few toasts over the holiday.

Hope this makes you smile too.

Cheers Sharkey

I spoil my deer on Christmas. Extra molasses in the feed, fresh alfalfa, and I also throw in the extra Christmas cookies, we always have bags of extras from our family get togethers.

Any other Christmas memories from off the farm ?? From back in the " old" days!!! Not that I'm old......... Or the present, maybe some pictures? Charlie. My dad's family milk fed a calf from March till Dec. then butchered it for Christmas. Ummmm well that doesn't sound all warm and cuddly but I bet he was "Good eating"!!!!! Charlie. :):):)

Charlie,

I was never a dairy farmer but had the opportunity to work on a few during summer breaks as a kid. I always loved the farming life.

A lot of hard work but at the end of the day you always felt good..

Yep, farm life was and is still cool, it's just all really different now but it's still fun to think back and here old farm stories!!! All seasons ! I remember working Sat. am in the hog barn (before skidders!) pitching and scraping down to the spreader ,and that was after us boys got home at around sun up!!! Anyway noon would come and we would all take off for the house...... The smell of T-bone steaks fried potatoes fresh bread !!!! The best time of my life!! But we thought we had it hard! Wow....... T-bone steaks for lunch!!!! But we had no idea what a pizza was! Sorry I'm rambling.

Well, you talked me into cleaning my chicken coop. 2 loader buckets later they are enjoying the fresh straw on the floor and in the nesting boxes.

Bennett finishing up his 3 eggs over easy, and 2 pieces of toast this morning. He's been a good boy this year, I no longer have much a raccoon problem. He trees them in and around the pens, and I take care of them from there. Eggs over easy is the least I could do.
