Small deer farmer in need of a good drop chute. Should I buy or build one? If so, where's the best place to buy one? Any suggestions or info is appreciated!

Thanks and God Bless,

Justin Robinson

In my opinion I would buy one if it's feasible and it's something you intend to use for a long time. I have been to alot of farms with "Homemade chutes" and NEVER seen one that works like a "Factory built Chute" first time every time! I use a Momma chute

It's one investment in the Deer Business that if you decide to get out you can easily recoup your investment!

I agree with Wayne if you are planning to have numbers of deer and are in for the long haul. Some of the homemade deals may have a flaw or two but for some farms the less than a grand compared to the three grand plus makes a big difference in the bottom line and they get the job done!  So true on the good ones though, they will last forever and recoup your investment. Like you will find out in farming...You have to do what works for you!! Good Luck!

A good drop chute set up with boxes and a good complete handling system is well worth the investment.  I also have a Mama chute and love it.  If you are in for the long haul you won't be sorry if you spend a little extra and get yourself set up right.  With a good set up you can do a lot with your deer by yourself.  Lots of stuff can go wrong when you are running deer through a handling system.  Stuff you can't believe until you see it happen.

Top of the line equipment is worth the cost.  I believe it is safer for the deer and for the guy using it.

David and Raymond Graber in Indiana make a chute for around 1500.00. I have it and have no complaints. I have run does to 300lb horned bucks. From what I seen and used I would take it over the papa that I have used. I am a keep it stupid simple guy, so less moving parts is a win win for me. Also the chute is just the end of the tunnel. Your tunnel or boxes to me is the most important part of the handling of your deer.

Look at it from this stand point, if you were to have an inexpensive chute and you were running one of your best does through the chute and it broke right when your best deer jumped in. That would be the definition of deer farming first of all, second, you could possibly hurt that doe badly. I say go factory with the drop chute at least, the tunnel system up to the chute you can build reasonably well to match the chute. Good luck either way.

Thanks for everyone's response. I will be pricing different brand chutes and boxes.

Good Luck with your decision and remember a good tunnel system and a chute go hand in hand in making your handling facility a success!
