We have been planting Dwarf Essex **** for several years, and really like it as a deer forage. Last fall, our **** crop was totally consumed by small flea-like bugs. This year, we do not see the fleas yet, but the damage is showing up on the plants. We believe that it is bugs again, but it is possible it is something else, maybe a disease of some type? What do you think that it is, and how do we treat it in a manner that is SAFE for the deer?

Thanks.

I would guess its a root fungus. If you plant he same place year after year a fungus will give u problems. We rotate ours every other year and havnt had problems.

Its flea beatles. The recomidation for treatment is sevin which has a short re-entry time just keep the deer off of it when u treat for a week or so.The only other thing it could be with out seeing the bug itself is thrips research both insects and see which one it is or post a pic of the actual bug

Thanks for the info guys. We talked to some of our local farmers and we decided to try Permetherin. We added Pepper spray to the mix so they don't eat it. But the permetherin we used you are supposed to spray directly on horses and cows. We sprayed a small food plot on our 120 acre pen, and our tame bucks in that pen hate pepper spray so we hoped that that would deter them.
