This a.m. I entered the deer pen and everything was fine. I noticed a deer laying down arching it's tail and wondered if she was having fawns. She stood up on my approach and I saw it was the doe that had 2 fawns the day before. When she stood up I saw she had some discharge hanging out of her, so I thought that was the reason for the arched tail when she was laying down, she was getting rid of discharge. She looked fine, acted normal & moved off with the rest of the deer. This was about 8 am. Tonight at 5:30pm this same doe was laying down inside a shed (that she never goes into) and was breathing heavy and very coarsely, head hung back over her shoulder and incoherant of my presence. I fininshed chores and she was dead by 7:30. I have been around this deer recently and she showed no signs of ill health, no coughing, no wheezing. I want to know why this doe died, so my questions is "What do I or what do I tell my vet to look for and how do I or how do I tell my vet to look for it". I had another doe in this pen die suddenly and without warning approx. 10 days ago don't know if her death is related to this one today, but of course am concerned it could be. I would appreciate any quick responses because of the doe's decomposition factor.

Thanks in advance.

Mark, have them check to see if she was toren inside. All full necopsey(sp) will be the best. Check blood for toxins, lungs, liver, spleen, heart and intestins for any clues. Good luck and sorry to hear about the bad luck....

Mark,

If you cant get a vet out You need to cut her open and cut off a piece of each organ and put each in its own baggy then refridgerate until you can get it to the vet. I would also collect a blood sample as well.

Could she have a still born in her? That would suck, but you wouldn't have to worry about the rest of the does!

I'm guessing a retained fawn and the doe died from the toxic effect of that. Time factor seems right for that. Easy to see cut, her open and see if she has anything inside the reproductive tract. If not like the rest said get samples and send in for results. Good luck and sorry about your problem.
