I just had one that had it and my vet gave me Di-trim tabs they are 960mg each and you give them a 1/2 a tab a day for 5 days or until cleared up it worked for me.
The most obvious symtom is blood in runny stool but the only way to confirm ecoli is to take it to a vet and have it cultured. Our process is while waiting on the culture try to harden up the stool and slow it down with pumpkin, kaopec, or all natural correction. The culture will tell you which treatment to use to knock it out.
The reason I say have it cultured is from past experiences. We usually treat with spectam first but last year we were treating it with that and once the culture came back it was resistant to spectam and had to be treated with Neomycin. Other times Ive seen it resistant to both.....So even if you kill the symptoms for a while you may not kill the ecoli.....Just my opinion
Symtoms I have seen with Ecoli on mother raised fawns is the lite colored watery stool and very lazy and a lack of appetite. Bottle babies I tend to find little flicks of blood mixed in the stools along with lazy and a loss of appetite. I know ole Ross will disagree with me but I also find the same symtoms in fawns that have an elevated level of Coccidia. One thing I keep on hand is SMZ`s. It`s like the American Express Card. Don`t raise a fawn without it. It`s a combination of a Sulfa drug and an Antibiotic. I`ll miss spell it I`m sure. Sulfamethaoxzole & Trimethriprim. It`s flavored and is given orally. It is the only thing in my box that I know can treat either ecoli or coccidia. If in doublt your covered. Very safe to use. Just the *******`s experience.
David I play it by ear depending on how much blood I see and how down the fawn is. If I catch it early I`ll put 2 cc in the mouth or in the milk for 4 days. If I have a bad case I`ll give 5cc the first day 4 cc the next 3cc the next and then 2cc. Like I say, it`s pretty safe. I do believe you could give it to a child. The Cherry flavor is really good tasting.
Ross I`m Polish so ya gota disagree with me.
I wouldn`t disagree with David because he`ll hold out on the icecream.
Sorry Allen I was typing with ya. It has to come from your vet. I think PBS carries it if your vet will write a script. As far as that goes I think Jeffers carries it along with Valley Vet.
Why do you keep trying to chnage my name to David........At least your getting the first letter right in my name......... that's ok I've been called much worse....
Damit Dennis I`m sorry. Again . I think David is right. I need my glasses on. I`m Polish and you guys with DC & DD. An old fart`s eys don`t see that well sitting here in the dark. I even put in a 28" monitor so I could see better. Looks like I should have put in a 35". Maybe it`s because my eyes are strained looking for fawns that aren`t there yet.
Thats too funny....sounds like your straining those eyes too...I thought I was the only one.........I hope mine don't cook those fawns to much longer or there going to be to big to come out!!!!! That's all i need!!!
