Ear Tagging!!!

I have to ear tag 4 adult does and 2 fawns from this Spring. The does were never ear tagged by the previous caretakers so now I"m playing catch up. We have to use the EID tags and the metal ones. Are these easy to put in? We'll have to dart all of them seeing as how we don't have a drop chute. Were fine with the darting....just concerned about placing the ear tags correctly. I don't want the fawn's ears to droop. Most of you all only have to use one tag so you probably don't have this issue when tagging your fawns. I just want to make sure the 2 tags won't be too heavy for there little ears. Also....even if were using a Xylazine/Telazol dose.....will they wake when we puncture the ear???? Just want to know the best way to do this......

Also, do I have to worry about possible hypothermia if we do this in November?

Put the metal tags on the top side and the regular tag just below the center line of the ear. Make sure you dont put them to far out on the ends of the ears thats what makes them droop. Only go about third way out of the ear.

You should not have a problem with darting them in nov as it's not to cold out then. When you put the deer down with the recomended dose of the cocktail they will be in la-la land and will not know a thing or feel the tag.... Untill you reverse them!!!

We tag our fawns at 1 or 2 days of age and rarely have an ear hang down. If they do, it is only for a day or 2. You will feel cartilage that runs across their ears like ribs. Tag between the cartilage on the inner part of the ear, nearer their head.

WOW! You guys are so stinkin helpful!!!! Thank you thank you thank you:)

We'll begin ear tagging all fawns from here on out. I just knew a lot of you don't have to use the EID's so I wasn't quite sure how weighty they'd be.
