Ear tags

Hello Everyone:

I am looking to change the ear tags I have been using. I was looking at the Allflex Global two piece tags with the Global Retract-o-matic applicator. Does anyone use this combination?

I have been using a one piece style tag with an applicator where the pin flips out as you pull away but because I tag my fawns very early, it was crimping, pinching and pulling the ear and causing some tearing and stress on the fawns.

I am looking for a quick, easy, low stress application. Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated.

I too have been looking at my style ear tags trying to decide on a one piece or two piece tag. I have a couple tagged with duflex medium size tags that look good. They also use bactericide coating to reduce infections.

I use small goat tags when they are small, i think regular are too heavy , then when i relocate them as they get older ... I put regular ones . Never had a problem.

Never used the Retracto-matic on deer, but have split enough ears with the Y-Tex to know it's not as good. Have tagged thousands of gilts with the Allflex R-O-Matic, prefer it a lot. Just have to find the right tags to put in it!

I was wondering if anybody using the microchip ID injected behind the ear. Sure would save alot of torn ears. Rick

We use microchips and have used them for about 17 years now. We get them from EZ ID Avid. We also use eartags for a visual ID as well but they are just small round dots. We put larger tags on later. We showed this all on one of our earlier TV shows. The microchips are their official ID and then they get a TB tag later when we do testing which also is an official ID.

How about using those metal ear tags that wrap around the front edge of the ear? Our deer herd before we got them were retagged so many times their ears are just shredded. The only ones that don't seem to have been ripped out is the steel tags. Thoughts? I need to order tags for this years fawns and as replacements so thought about using them.

Those sound like the TB tags the vet puts on when the deer are tested. Those are supposed to be permanent tags and not to be removed. The nice thing about the microchips is they stay with the deer forever and in most places are recognized as an official ID.

Sadly in MN they do not accept microchips as ID. They have to be able to visualize the tag in the deer's ear. Otherwise microchipping is what I'd do, as I offer chipping for dogs and cats etc.
