Does anyone use the metal State ID tags? I need help. I put them in the bottom last yr and i'll just say they didn't grow out with the ear as i would have thought. Should they go in the TOP side of the ear vs the bottom? Does the top not grow as much? Did i not leave enough space?

We put ours on the bottom . We only leave about 1/4" for the growth of the lobe and stay in the widest portion of the ear. That works out great for us .

I put mine in the top of the ear for the does, and the bottom for the bucks. Watch the veins in the ear. If punctured, they bleed like a siv. Like arrow, I leave about a quarter to half inch between the ear and the tag. I don't tag them when they are fawns I wait until 6 or 8 months old

I tag them immediately but leave a lot of space. I put them in the top but their ears tend to flop a little but straighten as they grow.

To many infections using them. Also with bucks flicking their ears and banging the tag against the antler opens up wounds and lets flys lay eggs. RFID buttons for me.

I use the metals on the tops of the ear, bottoms seem to rip more but that is just my preference. At weaning I leave a 1/4" and they grow out completely fine. If you are worried about infection spread some novasan on the tag before inserting. I am not in a heavy area for flies but have never had issues with the metals and flies personally.

I put them on the bottom (around the middle of the length) last yr and left 1/4" for growth. Not even close to enough space.

First yr i used them. We were asked at the shooter auction in the fall to use them so hunters can't see. i hate them. there ears are folded up in them. Hate to knock a deer down to replace an ear tag only but i hate looking at it everyday :( 20830:DSCN732120831:DSCN7331

Here is an example of how I tag mine. This is a yearling, notice his tag seems pretty cozy in there for being applied at birth. I always go with the Top of ear. I tag at birth and I leave a gap about the width of a pencil and they seem to always grow out fine. I tried RFID tags a few times and got sick of the 15 digit numbers to record, and since I exclusivly sell shooting stock, I want the least visible tagging option.
