EHD in PA - just wanted to let people know the first signs of EHD. Took these pictures of a shooter buck that we have that contacted EHD. As you will notice in the picture, swelling of the lower jaw, the esophagus area swelled up, drooling and spending a lot of time drinking. There is no weight loss...they will look fine today and tomorrow dead.

If I could be of any help, feel free to call.

Thanks.

Is that the only sign the buck has? Is the swelling the first sign or are they all different?

Mick,

are you certian it is EHD? Did you lose this deer? The only reason i ask is because i had a three year old buck who swelled up about two weeks ago similar to that and now he is fine.......does EHD always start like that with the swelling of the lower jaw?

Not trying to disagree but from the animals that i have witnessed with this it usually is caused by pneumonia or some type of lung issue and can be cleared up with couple days of baytril. Ryan

Dennis,

To the best of my knowledge, it is EHD. Its been in our area numerous times over the last 10 years. A good friend and fellow deer raiser has lost 7. The deer that I took pictures of died last night. When feeding my deer this morning, I noticed one of our best yearlings has swelling below the jaw, same as the buck that died.

Ryan,

In my opinion, this is not pneumonia because this will be 3 deer; I have lost 2 buck so far to this and have another one with the same symptoms this morning. The buck that died last night, I treated with micotil which is a respiratory drug. One of the strongest drugs that you can buy. In the reply that I sent to Dennis, I have a fellow deer-farmer and friend that has lost 7 so far to the same symptoms. Healthy one day and dead within two days. I'm also hearing reports of people finding deer in the wild dead also, in our area. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

It looks like EVERY case of blue tongue that I have seen. My experience with ehd is that the deer don't last more than 18-24 hrs from showing signs of illness. BT they can last for weeks with. Good luck with it....

Yep I just heard of a farm in Middlefield Ohio that has lost 15 deer in the last several days.....and a lot of them were their breeder bucks.......this disease is sickening and needs to be stopped!! This farm is only 86 miles to the North of me ...and now it sounds like ot is south of me as well........just makes me sick.....
