Elk herd revived, now reviled

Stoney Fork, Ky.-Bringing the majestic elk back to the hollows where they once roamed has become a nightmare.

Rogues from a herd that numbers in the thousands are trampling gardens, flattening fences and marring yards with manure in the SE Kentucky town of Stoney Fork. They have made the roads dangerous, causing dozens of car crashes.

Some residents have had enough. With the state's OK, they headed out into the woods to kill elk. They killed 13...

Sounds like some poor management to me .

Typical responce of city folks. They want to see wildlife at the expense of the land owner who feeds it never giving him the credit for the wildlife care. Being a public resource they should then have a right to look at it or hunt it anywhere it lives even on private land. But when that wildlife eats and lives in their yard the animals have to be killed or removed cause they can't afford to feed it their flowers and bushes. These people who think wildlife eat for free on private land now know the damage they cause on their own land and will not tolerate it. These same people think when a land owner wants a trespass fee to go hunting to recover some of the money it has cost him to feed the public wildlife he is screwing the hunter who wants to hunt for free on his land because he is hunting a public resourse.

jack your taken over where ( roger ) left off. Nice job , now go get them wolfs ,:d

David, Wolves are off the table. The govenor was only mouthing off. Seems we would lose our road funding so we can't shoot wolves that are killing livestock. To bad, so were back to SSS.

They brought them back here in PA and the folks went through the same problems. The only difference is they just learned to live with it. I watched them rub the siding off of houses first hand up by Emporium PA. They need to remember who was origanaly here first.

Here in emporium, we have a few hundred elk that eat, sleep and live in everyones yards. They have a drawing each year for tags to go shoot them. They just put in a multi-million dollar "Viewing" facility looking over a field and a bunch of small yards where you can watch people walk up and feed them. It was cool to watch them at first, but in the mountains up here, the only place they can go are peoples yards. The thing that bothers me about it, is people that get drawn for a tag dont have the opportunity to actually "hunt" them. They find whose yard they are sleeping in and drive them out. Its just not right.

now jack that sort of thing does not happen ,does it???????:p

Not by me that's for sure but I'm told some people are sick of wolves killing all the elk and deer and now starting on livestock. You know the yellowstone area had 33 thousand elk when wolves were introduced ten years ago. The count now is just a little over five thousand for that same area. One in 100 elk calves reaches one year of age in that area. The Feds in charge of wolves think it's something else and not the wolves fault. Funny thing where wolves are not yet in an area the elk are thriving. You know maybe our forfathers had the right idea on a bounty on wolves. Maybe even the jerks who wanted wolves should be included on that bounty or at least help feed them.

Jack,

You have to put your brain in neutral, at least for a couple more years. Stop making sense and thinking, and you will be a lot easier to control. Just turn on your local PBS station, and become a vegetarian. Now, don't you just love wolves? After all, they were here first, kind of like dinosaurs.

If that does not work. start chanting obama, obama, obama, and numb your mind the rest of the way...

Apologies if my tongue in cheek comments raised anyone's blood pressure. But, politicians should never be in charge of wildlife...

what needs to be done is the government bring back the herds 6,000,0000 bison roaming the country so the ecosystem is back in balance....but then everyone from Great Falls to Sioux City and as far south as Texas and north to Saskatoon SK. will have to find a new place to live :p This will however keep the wolves from preying on livestock as with 10% natural death loss there will be 600,000 bison for the wolves to eat.... imagine 400,000-500,000 wolves in their natural environment.

Curtis,

That would be something to see. Just imagine hundreds of wolves roaming the public Parks in New York. I'll bet the farm if that were to happen there would go the tolerance for letting these animals be wild and free. It's always the same we want these animals to be wild and free but not in my back yard.
