fawn bloating

I have a 13 day old fawn that was doing great on the bottle until yesterday when she backed off on her eating and seems to be bloating. She will start to eat and then she will hunch up in the abdomen and cry a little. I've given her antitoxin in the bottle and subQ along with penicillon, looking for any advice. We feed pasturized goats milk

Matt, you may have some bloating going on and we use Baytril when we think we have bloat. But also in the past we have had fawns that act the way that yours fawn are acting like and we have found that they are cutting new teeth and have a infection and the same drugs will clear them up. just a thought....

How much C&D and Pen-G did you give her? Is the bloating more prominent on one side? Has she been having normal bowel movements?

have given her 1cc pen subq twice, 1cc c&d orally and subq and then another round tonight. she is having good bowel movements a little like soft serve ice cream but I have been stimulating at every feeding

If she bloats up too big and goes down it will kill her quickly. The treatment dose is 10cc of C&D and 5cc of Pen-G SQ. Two weeks of age seems to be when colistridium perferingens can hit. Soft is okay but if it has a really bad odor that is also a sign. If it is just bloat from gas I have had success with Infant gas drops 3-5 cc orally. Don't let her eat until you get it cleared up but make sure she stays well hydrated with SQ fluids. Don't forget to follow up with probiotics after antibiotics. Good luck.

Sounds kinda like the dreaded 2 week old belly ache. Try pedialyte for 2 feedings and Baytril to get the gut infection. Followed with lots of probiotics. Target fawn paste is the best when you have one recovering!
