Have a fawn on the bottle that is loosing his hair. He is only 18 days old and I just noticed it a couple of days ago. Smallest of quads, he only weighed 2lbs. Also, he seems healthy as a horse.

I have a buck fawn on the bottle 3 yrs ago, he was the smallest of a set a triplets. He also started losing his hair very rapidly when he was only a few weeks old, by July he had lost all his baby fuzz and spots and actually started growing a short dark autum coat. I dont know why, but he did and he turned out fine and was pefectly healthy when he was weaned.

Hair loss in fawns is usually a nutritional issue. In many cases it is simply a vitamin deficiency, and most likely a shortage of vitamin D.

thanks for the responses folks, I am using Land-o-Lakes replacer and have before with no problems. Like I said he is as happy an healthy as can be.

Is the fawn itching a lot? Could he have gotten mites passed onto him from his mom?

Check stool for parasites...

Possibly a vitamin deficiency? Selenium, Vit E, copper? Do some more research on it, and see whether a BoSE shot might be recommended.

Glad your little guy is so happy and well!

I'm not sure, but it could be mites (or mange). Ivermectin SQ would resolve this, but you of course need to confirm with a Vet or medically certified person, which I am not.

I had a vet , and the manager at MFA both tell me that they do get some vit d from the sun ??? So maybe its true i do not know for sure ??

Jeff sunlight is critical to the absorbtion of vitamin D. Jim, I used land of lakes milk replacer years ago and had two fawns go completely bald. (see old forum) We had to make sweaters for them out of old T shirts to keep them from getting sunburned. I haven't used land of lakes products since.

switched over to red cap (Ricks method) after last post. His hair is starting to come back and he is big and healthy. Had to pull another buck fawn and he has all his hair...lol. So far so good.
