Fawn swallows nipple, now what?

I figured I would start this thread now to help prepare the couple of farms that will have this happen. Every year this topic comes up and the person who starts it is all in a panic wondering what to do. So.... don't panic. We have had it happen twice over the years and both times it never "passed through" the fawn that we know of. And no nothing terrible happened.

If I recall some people in the past said to feed the fawn this or that to help it pass. Again, everyone has their own way of doing things.

This post is to help the person who first has it happen this year so they have already been through it in their mind. Hope it helps.:)
 
There is a "sixth" dimension that foriegn objects must go to when ingested, because I have had it happen a couple of times as well and never seen the nipple again.

I did a quick search of the "old posts" and found this info for everyone to scan over.



The vet told us years ago that the nipple if it doesn't pass will just float around in the stomach forever. I don't know what is right, but I know we had 2 fawns over the years and no ill effects from it.

And if you think that something like that won't happen because you will stop them think again. It happens REALLY fast. It is like trying to stop your dog from eating that chunk of poop. You see it and say HEY come here, and by the time you get there it is gone.

Hey Roger seems like prichards are the worst for this! One second they are there the next gone. Had it happen 3-4 times with no ill effects. Sure can make you freak but like Roger say's happens every year! Scott I think has it figured out but who knows. ZZ

I check my pritchard nipples for weak spots a couple times a season. I just grab the end of the nipple and gently pull until I can see the rubber underneath of the plastic cap. Almost all weak spots are visible then, and are disposed of if cracks or cuts are seen.
 
I use no-vac bottles and nipples from England , and when they start to ware they will soften around the base and the whole nipple will pull out of the cap leaving a fawn with a soother for you to chase around trying to get it back, when you do a pull test on these nipples... if there bad they will pull apart about half an inch from the end
 
Reviving this thread so everyone performs a nipple check. Maybe we can avoid the issue this year completely.
 
I replace my fawn nipples yearly and do a check on them often......some of those fawns can be pretty rough....I got one that it's probably a good thing he is getting bottle fed....i have know idea how Mom would have put up with how hard he yanks on the nipple.....I think she would of have told him to get lost!!:D



P.S. before I posted this I re-read it and decided i better put the word "fawn" in before nipples as when I read it without "fawn" in it almost made me fall off my chair laughing!!
