I have a buck fawn that has puffy cheeks kinda like food impaction. There is nothing inside. It looks like it is swelled a bit. We thought it was lumpy jaw so we treated for it, and no changes. His teeth in the front are all loose, and looks like they are going to fall out, but are attached good to the gums. I am baffled.

I gave him....

MEDICINE & AMOUNT...............TREATED FOR

-1/2cc of textradore........................lumpy jaw

-2/10cc of mycatoyl (sp)..................lumpy jaw

- 12cc of plasmalyte electorlytes..........weak

- 6cc of Target fawn paste..................weak

ANYTHING ELSE IS GREATLLY APPRECIATED IT. THANKS GUYS!!!

I'd give him a shot of Fusogard and put him on penicllin ! Read the thread Applecreek had on here . I believe they had Pasteuella and had sores of the mouth which the penicillin took care of . It may be Fusobacteria which the penicillin would also help . Just a thought !!

Sounds like you need to give a shot of antibiotic and then vaccinate with Fusagaurd vaccine. I had same problem last year and cheeks will bust open eventualy and are full of puss. This is the same thing that causes hoof rot in older deer fawns get it from eating the dirt that has the bacteria in it. Will spread fast if not taken care of immediatly.

Wooden, Must have been typing at same time same thought thowe.

We moved our deer farm in the fall of 2007 in the summer of 2008 we did not have any samples to make a vaccine for necro bacisolsis fusarium bacteria specific to our new farm. We fed neo-teramycin pellets and put oxy-tetracycaline in the water but we lost 36 fawns to this killer (60%) this year we ,with our new vaccine we have lost (0%), thats right none. I still fedd the neo-teramycin pellets to the does to give a low grade dose because it takes very little anti-biotics to kill the bactreia if you get it early and the by-pass from the lactating does seems to work real good.

This morning i gave....

1/2cc Nuflor

8cc elctrolytes

I dont know what else to do. I was told that i shouldnt give nuflor with fusogar and penecillin. Any other suggestions guy?

Drew, I know that Sugarcreek Vet Clinic has had a vaccine made for fusobacteria. It may be better than the regular fusoguard since it was made from serum from an infected deer. Their number is 800-221-2594 or 330-852-2321. I think you may have to have your Vet order it.

Drew, when I get a fawn like this his symptoms are a puffy cheek, a little white around the front teeth, front teeth are loose, and sometimes you can spot them because their mouth doesn't look 100% closed while their breathing. I give them a 1/2 cc of Draxxin and you'll see improvement in a couple days.

B Whitetails why wouldn't you just switch to Penicillin and vaccinate with the Fusoguard ? If it's not getting better on the Nuflor and the electrolytes why stay with it ?

I just tryed the Nuflor this morning. It seems to not be doing a bit of good. The electrolytes are just keeping energy into him and keeping him hydrated. I am going to try some draxxin and or penicillin with fusogard. Thanks again guys!

Just a thought, but if he is not eating I would SQ him with fluids and try syringe feeding him. Good Luck.

drew, i know it is a little overdosing him but 3/4 cc of draxxin will fix him if it is lumpy jaw .. i have been fighting it in fawns for the past two weeks and with over 15 cases i have them all back to normal....
