fawns dying

John, you can order the prichard nipples from any animal supply catalog or online. ( Jeffers, Nasco, Valley Vet etc.) I get mine from Tractor Supply or Southern States. You can also order bottles. But the nipples will screw right on a pop bottle. Good luck. Allen

kydeer, we were typing at the same time.Hope John can get them straightened out.

Yes very important to wipe buts and peepees you have to stimulate them to go to potty. Mght want to get some gloves helps to keep fingures dry.

John,

I was wondering do you vaccinate your fawns when they are born? There are a few shots you should be giving them as well.......let me know if you need more info.

Thanks,

Dennis

Where are you located...You should get to a deer farmer ASAP to learn hands on ...It is really hands on... They will keep dying unless you learn right way/wrong way...There are so many tricks to it...

PS... I know you have had deer since 01 but you have not had a bottle baby live... so I don't mean you are not a deer farmer...but get to one that has bottle raised.

tell your boys to be patient, after they start sucking good 1 to 2 days 3 tops anybody should be able to feed them at that point it is actually good for different people to take part as the fawns become comfortable with different people, also stimulation will not necessarily have to be done while feeding, it can be done after they drink their milk, let the boys feed and you do the dirty work....

Sounds like you are on your way if she took 3 oz at one feeding instead od 1 Good Luck

Sorry guys sad to say see didn't make. She was doing so good when I quit at midnight then early this morning when I went out she was lying on her side with her mouth open. and cold. Two nights in a row that I've lost fawns, does it have anything to do with it. the over night thing got me before even when they were in the house [getting awfully hard on my family]. I will take you all up on the offers of contacting you today before I pull the other fawns.

thanks

John

My number is (724)735-9924 so sorry to hear of you loss.If you want to try and figure things out.

Call somebody way before pulling...You may need to run to store or vets first.

Not being rude but.....I don't think that matters At this point.

I think things are wrong even before that point.

It does of course matter, but that is not the only problem.

I have taken phone #'s and will spend the day talking personally to some of you but please keep sending your coments and ph. #'s or e-mails. I've decided to leave on mom till I get this straightened out

thanks

John

sorry i missed that, sorry for your loss and I hope someone can help you get on the right track with a successful fawn care program...

Dear John,

Sorry about your fawn problems. Been there.

From your description I think your fawns could be dying from starvation due to hypothermia.

Fawns really can't regulate their own body temperature for the first few days. If they get cold, (below about 100 degrees), their suckling response dies. This might explain why they're not taking the bottle. Prichard teats work with fawns very well. They fit onto a plastic pop bottle (cheap).

If our fawns won't suck, the first thing we do is take their temp. If they are below 100 degrees we warm them up ASAP. There are many ways to do this.

We use a hot box. You can also lay them on a hot pad with a heat lamp on them. Be sure the lamp isn't too hot or close or you'll burn the hide right off them. You can put them in a water bath of warm water. As long as you can stand to leave your hand in it you won't scald the fawn. Keep it's head up! The method you warm them up doesn't matter. Don't feed them anything until their body temp is above 100 degrees.

The reason we don't feed them until they get warm is that their gastrointestinal system shuts down. If you tube them with milk before this, the milk just sits there and gets cold. Then you have to warm the milk up inside the fawn as well as the fawns body.

Pen size shouldn't matter. Who feeds shouldn't matter. Just keep them warm!

Hope this helps,

Randy, that is a good idea. I never thought about the body temp affecting the fawns responses. I spoke with John today and he is determined to make it work. I sent him some prichert nipples, feeding tube and Fawn energy pack to help get he going. I know he appreciates all the help from everyone. We too, have been there and it is a rough road to follow. Best of luck to everyone.

I am so sorry to hear what you went through today me and my kids talked things over and we would like to make you an offer when you and your kids are feeling up to it give us a call.

I hope everyting else is going good.

Trust me some days deer don't seem worth the work when you take a loss like today...Thank-God those days don't come often, and the rest of the year is great.

Take care for now.

Billiejo

Well here we go. Yesterday was a rough one, first of all we have to thank everone for all your help. My wife and I have never recieved this much help without being ripped on for making a mistake. She just made the comment again, that these are the people we need to share our deer farming issues good or bad with.

After losing the fawn in the morning I spoke with MP and then with Billiejo and told both about our 10 yr old doe that was having trouble fawning for three days and was going to die. After discussing with them and finially my vet we decided to put her down and take the fawns out. Was having real hard time this, but new I had no choice. After putting her down, I sliced behind the rib and down, found the babys and got them out. And they were alive and doing great. I could not believe it! I had rubbers gloves on and was trying to dry them off. They were so alert heads up swaying around blowing stuff out their nose. So I ran down to the house and got a towel to dry off better. When I came back the other and only doe in the pen with her was over there stamping the u know what out of these fawns and by the time I got to her it was to late.

And just like that it was over. I couldn't believe that I had save these babys and then this. What a rollercoaster!!!

In 48 hrs I lost over half my herd. Not easy to take, but as I told MP and Billiejo I am a determined and stubborn person that is willing to learn. [I WILL BE a successful deer farmer]

Again thanks for very thing

John,Eva,Jeffrey,Rj

PS for those of you that have asked we are located in northern MN about 2hrs from canada
